Today is James Joyce's birthday, but I have an idea for a theme hour playlist more suitable as a tribute to Georges Perec. Play only groups whose names don't include the letter "e." So, no The Kinks, but Madonna? Sure. No Beatles or Bowie, but Oasis is a-OK.

DJ Michael Shelley goes to extremes in that regard. He routinely relegates the "The" to a position at the end, following a comma and space. So, The The would be The, The.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm

my gut feeling is it's probably good for your apartment - just as being cool is better for your body than being warm.
(unless of course you're trying to burn up bacteria or viruses; but that should be short-term)
certainly better for your apartment than warmth, anyway.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Handy Haversack:

Hey, Chris.

Dean, I noticed that when using the basic Playlist Search function, it does seem smart enough to return, say, both "Cure, the" and "The Cure," no matter which I search for, but I don't think it corrects for it when the DJs enter the names or in terms of needing to clicky-star again for the variant.

i was prescribed warm water (with astragalus extract in it) by an acupuncturist. warmth is yang. many people's illnesses are yin, if not their whole condition.
also cold water constricts the stomach and small intestines, inhibiting any digestive processes going on and possibly causing muscular cramps.

It was the first (and for a long time the only) time I saw JAMC when Munki was released. I was excited but still I was stupidly expecting at least some of the chaos their previous visit to Finland had (1988, William Reid so drunk he fell off the chair he was trying to sit on while playing, resulting in a gig with all of two songs)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
coelacanthβˆ…:

HyperD i'm not; but if you raise your body temperature enough it will certainly destroy the flu (corona) virus. that's what a fever is for. people have cured aids that way, but aids is many times more serious than covid, and the method used is draining blood out, heating it to...106ΒΊf -? and returning it to the body. this has to be done at least once/week for many months, if not years, because you can only drain so much at a time.

HyperD that said, the hot tub or sauna surely would help...but if you have the virus and aren't sick then you've created the immunity; and if you are sick it's probably pneumonia and much more needs to be done than that.
  3:35pm
Nick:

I think the study's focus was on whether or not the microwave's agitation of the water had some effect, rather than warm vs cold water... but your description of your coworker liking body temperature water reminds me of it.

some people say boiling water then letting it cool creates "dead water" - which is probably why a packet of tea will usually tell you to use "freshly boiled water".
maybe it's because you decrease the oxygen levels in the water by boiling it.

i'm pretty sure oxygen bars have been around for a while already. it strikes me as sad and "Orwellian" but most of all ludicrous. ...basically let's fuck up our host planet to the point the air is not adequate then make pure oxygen available to those who can afford it.

phillipe it depends on the sort of oxygen you want really. if you take a jar of hydrogen peroxide in an actinated (tinted) bottle or dark bottle, and keep it in the fridge you can store that a long time, then take it out, and let it de-pressurize and you get some oxygen, you can do it more rapidly if you take something that can rust like an iron nail and pour it over, same with steel wool.

"The Factory Models of the 1900's had a significant and lasting impact on the educational curriculum and testing frameworks developed in America's public schools. The child was viewed as a product, the school was designed as an educational factory, and standardized testing became the quality control mechanism for measuring educational progress. The effects of these structures can still be seen in today's public school organizations. Breaking free of the limiting effects of standardized testing requires changes in teacher education, school organization, curriculum frameworks, and especially, the methods of assessment currently used in public schools. Viewing assessment as 'reflective inquiry' rather than the measurement of accumulated facts, requires time, a new perspective, and dialogue among educators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]"--Serafini, F. W. Phil, nice... thats one thing i dislike about my old cars is if i find a shop to work on em, when i get it there it sits for a few months ( 3 of em have been at shops since sep, sep, and oct and not much work done yet . mostly because its real work to work on them ..so i've been buying other cheap cars when one breaks down, and waiting half a year on average for repairs.

@6:42 Scott67: last summer a radio app (as if you could call mine a smartphone...) did it the other way around, did play drummer but not sheena. uninstalled the app and installed VLC media player with which all of them work - though you need to have the .pls files

"You Make Me Feel Cheap" was something of a local hit. I worked with guitarist Kimm Gardener's sister for a time in a record store.

Oh, thoughts about the Fourth Hour I had while feeding the monsters, Julie:

Bands/albums/tracks with countries in 'em.
Six Degrees of the Dark Night: Put together an hour of "Plays in this band, but then went to this band, who had a person who played in this band, which became this band, etc."

HEART! How I heart them. Even the eighties stuff!

@james there's an older Nancy song I love but I felt like going with the hit.

My south-facing roof has deep snow sticking out over the eaves. On the east-facing panel, hardly anything. So your roof might be OK, depending on the situation, Julie. I've got a roof rake. If you think I should check it, send me the address and any special instructions I should know about.

thanks Handy! So numbers or countries..I'll see what works as I'm setting it up, then save the other one for later

@6:47 Dean: channel 3 were cover rather early (in 1983? though released later) in Finnish by Riistetyt. Track called "Haluun Kuolemaa", no idea what the original was called.

Nick:

julie, i looked the band up on it.wikipedia.org and apparenty they still count as rock.

Ken it's just a fixer upper so I'm a bit worried. inspectors seemed to think the roof would be good a couple more years, hopefully that applies to snow

Which is the other Nancy song, Julie?

I also have wondered if there are enough "So and So Says" (Lisa, Cherry, etc.) songs to make up a whole hour?

MOE! God, this song is so great.

I like the country idea. Or country/city/state, to make the universe of candidates wider.

julie, it seems the sixes sevens and nines is the album name. so it won't count anyways ^_^

That's amazing about Channel 3, Photocopy! Robbie Fields was on a roll at the time. He even brought F Word's Rik L Rik for an appearance at the store where I worked way over on the eastern edge of LA County.

super fun. thanks, Julie. my suggestion for next week's 4th hour: improbably upbeat songs (horrible things happening lyrically, but major keys, upbeat music) :)
