Look for "Dances in the Canebrakes." Amazing stuff!

	9:52am Listener Gregory: May I recommend a new record by baritone Will Liverman, "Dreams of a New Day: Songs by Black Composers"? They are all classical art songs, no spirituals, but they are wonderfully tuneful and very well sung. On Cedille Records.

	9:55am Doug Schulkind: @Listener Gregory Heard an NPR interview with Mr. Liverman. Made a note to get that collection. I love it that you love it, Mark Hurst! It's so easy to say that Gershwin or Copland cornered the market on the "American" sound. But they were listening to geniuses like William Grant Still and Florence Price.

	9:58am Webhamster Henry: A good thing too! They take up much needed time from the endless blah-blah-blah.
	9:58am Doug Schulkind: From Wikipedia: In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers were found in an abandoned dilapidated house on the outskirts of St. Anne, Illinois. These consisted of dozens of her scores, including her two violin concertos and her fourth symphony. As Alex Ross stated in The New Yorker in February 2018, "not only did Price fail to enter the canon; a large quantity of her music came perilously close to obliteration. That run-down house in St. Anne is a potent symbol of how a country can forget its cultural history."

	10:04am Doug Schulkind: Two shorter movements to go. The next, Juba Dance, is inspired by the great Black minstrel performer, William Henry Lane (known as "Juba").

	10:05am Doug Schulkind: Slide whistle and hand drums in a major American orchestral performance!! Eyes were surely rolling in some corners.

	10:06am Doug Schulkind: This was first performed in 1933. @Jeff Golick There is Juba everywhere. My personal fave is Yusef Lateef's "Juba Juba."
	10:07am still b/p: Interesting influence mapping, as with the movies -- immigrants or men from Jewish immigrant families headed the giant studios and focused often on producing their desired or idealized versions of America, which became the vocabulary of American scenes and sentiments for audiences -- as described in Neal Gablers book, An Empire Of Their Own, read a couple decades ago.

She's clearly taking from American folk like Copeland did, so tough to tell whether Copeland was influenced by her but fascinating to know that a black female composer covered so much of Copeland's terrain prior. And maybe sadly unsurprising.
	10:15am Listener Gregory: The Liverman album has songs by Margaret Bonds, who was a student of Price's. She was the first African American to perform with the Chicago Symphony.

	10:18am Doug Schulkind: @Listener Gregory Margaret Bonds was also Florence Price's longtime roommate in Chicago! In that 1932 composing competition that Price won First and Third Prize, Bonds won Second Prize!
	10:18am ?: May/June issue of Fanfare magazine features an interview with conductor Jeter of the Price symphony. A reviewer of a 2012 recording of her piano concerto wrote that Price "was a finer and more imaginative composer than any other American composer then working in a tonal idiom, which group includes Gershwin, Copland, and Still. Price’s scores fused Western classical form with both Slavic and African-American-influenced themes in a way that was genuinely creative and original, but all she got for her pains was one performance of her symphony by Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Her scores weren’t even published, and she died virtually forgotten in 1953."

	11:09am Doug Schulkind: I used to hate mustard. As a kid, I never got hot dogs because the hot dog guys would always automatically slather mustard on every dog without asking. When I got to New York as a newly minted adult, I couldn't go to a ballgame and not get a dog. It would have been sacrilegious. That's how I learned to love mustard. Now I adore mustard.

As Alex Ross stated in The New Yorker in February 2018, "not only did Price fail to enter the canon; a large quantity of her music came perilously close to obliteration. That run-down house in St. Anne is a potent symbol of how a country can forget its cultural history."

Price’s scores fused Western classical form with both Slavic and African-American-influenced themes in a way that was genuinely creative and original, but all she got for her pains was one performance of her symphony by Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
