Speaking of Gamble and Huff, I was a bit startled to just learn a few days ago they and third writer Gilbert were sued for one horn phrase in Me and Mrs. Jones taken from the song Secret Love. (Hadn't recognized the musical ref/association in it before, but you hear it easily when it's pointed out.) Plaintiff won! Got credit and money! You listen to it and think, man, if that's sue-able and winnable, there's a vast, vast teeming sea of unfiled lawsuits with potential out there.

So many to sue. So little time.

@chresti
YES to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Little Danny:

That's funny, I heard a bit of "I'm a Fool to Want You."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
WR:

still b/p: that is such a slippery slope. I am still bugged that George Harrison was successfully sued for My Sweet Lord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Doug Schulkind:

But in 22/13 time, right, Little Danny?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Little Danny:

I'm counting out the beats right now Doug!

I authored the original paired line format of "So many X. So little time."
So I'll see you in court, friendo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm

@Little Danny
So many beats, you end up with borscht. Amirite?!

@still b/p
Everything I have is already yours. I just hand it over each week, three hours at a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
coelacanth∅:

s b/p i don't know what "one horn phrase" means but i know americans (especially but not exclusively) suck in the lawsuit department.
and ironic that George Harrison, who'd, like all beatles, never sue anyone for the hundreds or thousands of opportunities to, who penned "sue me sue you blues", got sued for a common and obvious chord progression
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Little Danny:

Doug nooo don't fall down that hole!

Great choice from the Sewlson / Reid show Doug.

The way to counter a suit like that might be to dig up an older song with similarities to the supposed original??

Too lazy to google right now, but wasn't there some lawsuit aimed by the Beatles at the Rutles?

'Get Up & Go' was too close to 'Get Back'. John gave him a friendly warning he'd get busted for it ! But the only Beatle not very amused by TheRutles was apparently Paul. This despite they portrayed Yoko as Hitler's daughter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

hey you fixed it!

Well the story is Lennon's warning really *was* friendly - not resentful or litigious for his part...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm

maybe Lennon was just warning them.
it's hard to imagine John would care about someone "ripping off" (tributing, in actuality) a Paul song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm

Thanks for the details Rev Rabbit. On Neil Innes NPR Tiny Desk Concert appearance he mentioned it but couldn't recall the song.

In fact John thot Paul singing Jojo should get back to where she belonged was a veiled sneer @ Yoko... Earlier in the evolution of it - it was a parody of RightWing anti-immigrant B.S. in the UK - but they dropped that...
WR - funny ! Like TheBeatles themselves - they forget details the rest of us build a Culture out of...

I only heard about this show this morning, so I am listening late. It's great! Doug, you should consider a weekly "This Week on the Drummer Stream" show. It would especially help those of us who just focus on 2 or 3 shows to learn about the others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Really glad you dug the show! It would be fantastic to have such a show be presented weekly or even semi-regularly. It's actually a ton of work, so hard to make promises.
