Totally wrong about Harrison. He played from a position of strength. He knew he could do whatever he wanted- record with his mates if he felt like it, or record his songs on his own, which he ultimately did. But when he had enough of the lads and left, they begged him to come back.

PJ:

One thing that it's hard for someone outside to comprehend is that, for someone in a group that is really good, who has never been in a group that is bad, or just not as good, is that they have little or no idea what it is to make music without the support of their fellow band members, so the decision to break-up, or leave, or kick a band member out, doesn't carry nearly the weight it does for someone who is a fan. Joe Strummer said that he had no idea what a great band he had had until they kicked out Topper and then Mick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
JG:

@ Krys, yeah that's true. Just meant he wasn't weak. But in terms of leadership, you can't compare him to ,say, Paul. Paul seemed godlike in the movie. Like his style of leadership or not, he was leading and he was glowing with not only talent but authority

  12:57pm
PJ:

@JG - I disagree on Paul's "godlike" status, but he was just filling a void, since Epstein died, that they all recognized but no one else was willing to fill. They could have hired another manager (who, I have no idea, and given their choice of Klein later, would they have made a wise choice in 1967?) but they didn't, until their problems became intractable. John could have stepped up - and you can see the others wanting him to be more of a presence (maybe he could have been a "co-captain" with Paul?) - but he clearly didn't want to deal with it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Krys O.:

The Credibility Gap were sadly overlooked.
  1:02pm
PJ:

@Krys: The problem with Linda's father, from the others' perspective, is that, even if they thought he would be a better manager (and a rotting skunk corpse would have been better than Klein), they would assume he would be taking Paul's side all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Krys O.:

Indeed, PJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
JG:

@PJ, I thought, as an outsider looking in, "godlike", because to use another metaphor he had , of the four superstars, the biggest gravitational force. Everybody else was to some extent in his orbit. He shined the brightest.
  1:06pm
PJ:

@Pseu: re the Beatles as followers, their gullibility (or credulity, to put a better spin on it) with people like the Maharishi, Magic Alex, Klein, et al., shows how they had really been sheltered by Epstein, and when that protection was removed, they were going to learn the hard way just how far peace and love alone will get you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm

Two Sisters
  1:13pm
PJ:

@JG: I've only seen the first episode, but, from that, Paul definitely seems to bringing more to the table songwise (even if I don't care that much for a lot of them), but that's partly because no one else wants to listen to George, who is actually writing the best of their songs in this period (though the public won't get to hear most of them until Abbey Road and All Things Must Pass). But he needs someone like Lennon to check him, because a lot of his ideas are not that good (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, christ) and need to be developed or shut down. One of the problems is that Paul is the only one who has a lot of enthusiasm for this particular project. If they were less dismissive of George's songs, maybe he would bring more energy to the sessions.

Krys O.:

Very Peter Green-like.
  1:18pm
PJ:

@Pseu: Sure, but we can see how a lot of the Beatles business decisions they made after Epstein were bad for them. Part of that has to be because they never had to make those decisions before and didn't have anyone to advise them and were going on their "instincts", which were not so good. (And Epstein made a lot of not good business decisions too - on royalties and merch - when he was getting started with them.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
JG:

PJ- Not sure if you've seen this part yet, (its surprising and awesome) but as another example of George's strength, they jam on some of All Things Must Pass. Paul has suggestions and they sort of take the song in another direction, and not the right direction. George doesn't get indignant or object the way I think Paul would have if the roles were reversed, but simply shrugs them of. He must figured, F it, I'll just put this on my own album which thankfully he did

Mike Sin:

I loved "Get Back" from start to finish, but then I have been a hopeless nerded-out BeatlesGeek for decades now. I'm amazed to see folks rank on Michael Lindsay-Hogg -- The Beatles pulled such a "bait and switch" on this guy! This guy was called in to direct TV special with the main focus on the very visual and anticipated live concert -- He originally figured the rehearsing footage would such a small part of the whole broadcast -- he was thinking visually and was concentrating on the Beatles live at the venue and the fans and the build-up to that. I find the visual aspect of his videos for Paperback Writer, Rain, Hey Jude, and Revolution downright excellent!
  1:23pm
PJ:

@JG: Yeah, George had a different way of dealing with that than either Paul or John, maybe because he still felt like the little brother rather than an equal (viz his comments to Paul "I'll just play whatever you want").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Krys O.:

The Magic Christian is my second all-time favorite film. As a kid, I saw it heavily edited on TV home sick from school. The Badfinger music was incredible and I loved all the British comedy greats like Spike, Peter, Cleese, etc. It inspired me to read the book and later saw the uncut version.

herro dere. i remember my fascination with 40s and 50s clothing in the 70s, 60s in the 80s and 70s in the 90s. but that was based on old people dying and their clothes getting donated to the salvation army.

i just logged in so don't yell at me pseu - 'WE'VE MOVED ON.'

Pfizer booster yesterday. Arm is a little sore. Feeling fine otherwise. Body is ready to start stomping on virus particles should they enter the vicinity.

....although i never got the 70s fascination with vaudeville style entertainment. the osmonds singing down by the lazy river with jimmy on banjo was just crap.

pretty much hate music docs. people always talking over performance footage. also, sometimes takes away from mystery /magic of the music/musicians. i enjoy more not knowing.
