I try never to half ass a fill-in spot, that's for sure! The plan is always 100% vinyl but I do have hundred up great CDs as well. I just don't use them often.

I'd love to see your LP storage (and show my wife when she complains about records taking over the house, I always need someone worse to point to).

At your service doc, Franco's got half the living room occupied by thigh-high stacks of lps on the floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
doctorjazz:

chresti, that will come in handy at some point, I'm sure, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
chresti:

OK, knee-high stacks, rather. You might have the smelling salts handy when you show her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
KimSorise:

I just use Kallax shelving via Ikea - but everything is attached together and anchored to the wall.
It works of what I need. I can't stack anything since I am only 5 ft tall. Would rather not have to deal with a ladder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
doctorjazz:

Got LP's and CD's in 4 rooms, and a basement full as well.
Back many years ago, a friend who was also a lunatic collector had a living room with stacks and stacks of LPs. I was there once when he needed to change a light bulb-he put a few piles together, got up on them, and did the lightbulb change (now he's got multiple terabytes of music on a server, less clutter, but not sure he's able to change light bulbs any more)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
doctorjazz:

I've been using these racks
ryantinselwoodworker.com...
Nice looking, but a bit expensive, and I've run out of wall space, piles in a corner of the living room right now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
KimSorise:

Those are lovely. Looks very light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
chresti:

Stacking them 3ft high doesn't seem like a good way to preserve them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
doctorjazz:

They are light, until they're full of LP's.
I remember when I moved, and had many of those racks. They don't look like all that much in terms of weight, but the movers gave me such dirty looks as they carried them in the house.
I haven't done an LP count in a while, but I'd guess in the 6-8,000 range (last time I tried to count, in the 90's, it was about 4,000 in my living room, excluding basement overflow at the time. And the CD;s...and the hard drive...

WR:

I've updated my profile pic to be a photo taken in my living room before my last move over 10 years ago, when all my LPs went into storage.

The holder with the software CDs is now filled with music CDs and is about 3 feet high, so the LP stack is about 4-5 feet. In the background you can see the top of my LP shelves. I don't remember the exact height, but over 8 feet. It holds 6 or 7 rows of LPs and one row that could hold CDs, two high. I have 3 cabinets, each one about 4 feet wide. They were all full and then I had about 8 or 10 of those 4+ feet high piles of LPs on the floor. The cabinets were a wedding gift from one of my brothers in '88. At some point I think I figured that the cabinets held around 7000 LPs. I've bought or otherwise acquired only about 30 LPs since 2009, shifting to CDs and digital. And still I don't have most of what I like and hear played on WFMU. Go figure.

Crazy thing is that I've kept the LPs and cabinets in storage for 10 years. Oy vey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
chresti:

The LPs are in the cabinets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

Hi Kim, made it in time for some greasy second helpings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
chresti:

Franco and his dad built shelves and drawers before we moved in around 2005, the books, LP, and cd population has since exploded and outgrown the shelves since then.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
WR:

In the background you can see the top of one of the cabinets. The top row is all over-size, mostly box sets, that are too tall to fit in the other rows. that were sized for standard LPs.

Yeah, the shelve were nearly full when I moved in about '98. All the thrift store purchases of the early zips went into about 6 or 8 milk crates and then started the piles like the one in the photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
KimSorise:

Hey Rey and Coel! Welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm contemplating building shelves for my albums. one 4-tiered shelf from 1 wall to the other would hold (i think) about 3/4 of them. it'd streamline my selling and reviewing and give me most of the room back.
right now they're in boxes, all but 3 floor-level
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
coelacanth∅:

hi (again) Kim!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
WR:

Having them ordered in shelves was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
coelacanth∅:

in the late 80s i moved into a beautiful apartment in north plainfield nj. my bedroom was 17.5 ' long and over 1/2 of it was ~16' wide, and one wall was built-in shelves starting from ~18" from the floor that if i didn't think were built about a century before the lp was invented i'd say they must've been made specifically for lps.
that was handy!
