A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

Favoriting December 27, 2021: Swirled Freely & You Have Nowhere to Go (What's Wrong?) | Download MP3

Two dreamy, mysterious live sound collage creations from my long-ago performances:

First, "Swirled Freely," a wordless and happy-dream-making lazy layering play of field recordings from all over the world, and pleasing electronic musics from many joymakers. Originally collaged live on radio in Austin, January 2005.

Second, a very spooky dream immersion called "You Have Nowhere to Go (What's wrong?)", a spontaneous live radio study from 2004, repurposing the sound montage elements that made the 1971 film THX 1138 so scarily transportative.

For those who haven't seen it, it's George Lucas's first film, from 1971, a very comprehensive dystopian film that uses almost no exposition, relying almost entirely on the brilliant sound montage work by co-writer Walter Murch. Most of what you come to understand about this "future" world comes from your listening.

It's hard to find the original version of this film. Like his Star Wars films, Lucas went back and added lots of unnecessary special effects that didn't merge well with the film's original gritty, claustrophobic atmosphere.

It's a shame, the 2004 DVD version has clearer sound, and the sound is so important...but Lucas added numerous weird modern effects and changes and embellishments and didn't even label this as being a changed release.

I used to think Murch worked on Star Wars, due to the Lucas connection and similarity to some of the techniques heard in the film, which was actually Ben Burt, but I guess he didn't.

Do you have a Murch show from The Conversation or Return To Oz?
Avatar 4:03pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I've used quite a lot of Return to Oz samples. I've used a couple of The Conversation samples. I just watched a short interview with him in which he discusses, recently, how decades of reflection helped him figure out how Return to Oz was actually a terrifying film, despite his intentions.
Avatar 4:05pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

But I suppose he figures THX-1138 isn't terrifying either. #relatable

I guess I don't commonly focus on a single subject/film in a show. Others I can think of: "The Coming Storms" (focus only on The Terminator) lastever.org..., "Karen's Dead" (focus a bunch on Ordinary People) lastever.org... ...hmmm what else...

Listener Robert:

Funny but this morning I dreamed I was in a new Mr. Magoo cartoon, apparently as Magoo, and that I needed to urinate. I found a place to urinate at an archeologic site and used it. I was afraid I'd wet the bed as I did once in 2003 on dreaing I was urinating in a strange place after looking around for one, but fortunately this time that was not the case. And now I'm drowsy again.

Performance perfect is perfect performance, Robert. (Was the joke that you'd wake up and say, oh, Magoo, you've done it again!)

Oh yeah there was a music studio right below the radio studio in this old building. When my mic is on you can sometimes hear the drums shaking the wood floors.
Avatar 4:32pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I first saw RtO when I was a teenager and it didn't occur to me it could be scary to anyone. I find it scarier now - well, the almost-electroshock scene. But there's a scarier version of that in The Muppet Movie, and dear god, The Princess Bride...
Avatar 4:33pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

One of the terrible Superman sequels had one, I regret even mentioning it
Avatar 4:34pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

But in RtO, it had a political purpose. Long history of unwarranted experimental medical interventions on children and all that.
Avatar 4:36pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I haven't rewatched THX-1138 in forever, been saving it. But I can't decide whether to watch the modern version (fantastic sound, which obviously matters a lot to me), or the laserdisc version (no ridiculous special effects added by George Lucas 30 years later).
Avatar 4:46pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Although not as significant a film, reminds me of the Yellow Submarine dilemma: Watch modern version (great sound, clean visuals...but, the top 20% and bottom 20% of the fucking screen is cut off), or watch earlier VHS rip (crummy quality, but at least the whole scene is actually visible, heads not cut off, visual gags totally cropped out!)

Puget Sound:

Yes. An astonishing revelation moment at the end of THX1138. When I lived in the SF Bay Area (listening to OverTheEdge natch), it was always a treat to drive through the Caldecott Tunnel and imagine I was making a getaway to The Above. I goosepimple when Tate's silhouetted against the majestic, finally-seen sun AND a bird flies by which we can see him clocking in astonishment. As for old formats vs new. I'm finding that remastered sound and visual is overrated (certainly if at the expense of proper framing or structure). In fact, if there's ever a mono option, I tend to opt for it over 5.1 Sensurround, 7-Dimensional, Smell-O-Vision. Unfortunately, there rarely is (e.g. Mission Impossible & TexasChainsaw).
Another marvellous show, Ken.
Happy New Year!!!!
Avatar 1:02pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Puget Sound: It's true, original/mono wins. (Although, I DO think Walter Murch did a good, authentic job remastering his THX-1138 sound, while George Lucas simultaneously did an offensive job on the updated video/editing. The new sound felt like "what was originally intended" whereas the new video felt like "I'm a completely different person 30 years later and here's what I would've done today."

Puget Sound:

I re-watched it about a year ago, streaming it from somewhat. It seemed the same as I remembered it when I saw it moons past. Peradventure a little more hd, but I opt to set my telly's picture quality to 'Movie,' so that tends to minimise the hd'ing.
Well, until next time . . .Blessings of The State. Blessings of the masses.
