It's not radio exactly. It's purchasable, downloadable or CD audio content. But it sounds a lot like a radio drama.

Mr. Fab: there's a few other similarities between The Scarlet Queen and Star Trek: the ship, the crew, the captain and first mate "landing" at each new port / planet to get into an adventure.

Then again, there's a lot of stuff with that same format, so it's probably just a convenient story format.

While I can't get confirmation, usually in this era, kids were performed by adult actors, because kid actors were often not as reliable, and couldn't be in a radio studio recording programs all day long. But it is interesting to imagine four adults crowding around a microphone, two of them pretending to be kids, one pretending to be a dim mother, and one pretending to be a powerful magician.

Austin Rich:

Certainly, this author borrowed the Asimov "Three laws of Robotics."
  7:44pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Prime directive is even mentioned

Austin Rich:

Jack Williamson wrote this story for a sci-fi magazine, and was adapted by John Dunkel for this show. I'm not familiar with Jack Williamson, but he was pretty popular in those days. I should look up his stuff.
  7:44pm
Listener Robert:

Sorry, but those 3 laws are so obvious, it didn't take Asimov to come up with them. So I don't think there was any borrowing.
  7:45pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Asimov was among the writers for this series, though
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

Robert: is that true? I always assume the tree laws was an Asimov creation. So much to learn!

assumed the three laws...

Wonder if this was the first use of the phrase "prime directive."
  7:46pm
Listener Robert:

Anyone who thinks about the subject for a few minutes comes up with the same laws. There's an XKCD on variations.

Hmmmmm. Wikipedia says it was Asimov. Perhaps there's other citations?

Austin Rich:

Well, I guess there's always a second story:

"Asimov attributes the Three Laws to John W. Campbell, from a conversation that took place on 23 December 1940."
  7:49pm
Listener Robert:

Asimov's just the first writer on the subject who thought it worthwhile to give them a name.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

But I guess Asimov was the first to publish it.

This is a very creepy show!

Austin Rich:

Ha! From the same source:

"Jack Williamson's novelette "With Folded Hands" (1947), later rewritten as the novel The Humanoids, deals with robot servants whose prime directive is "To Serve and Obey, And Guard Men From Harm". While Asimov's robotic laws are meant to protect humans from harm, the robots in Williamson's story have taken these instructions to the extreme; they protect humans from everything, including unhappiness, stress, unhealthy lifestyle and all actions that could be potentially dangerous. All that is left for humans to do is to sit with folded hands."
  7:51pm
Listener Robert:

None of that matters. Anyone who thinks about the subject a bit, regardless of whether they've ever heard of Asimov, comes up with the same laws.
  7:52pm
Ellen Lovebug:

What a nightmare
  7:53pm
Listener Robert:

You want a funnier take on the idea to serve and obey and guard men from harm? See the movie of "The Monitors". I haven't read the Keith Laumer novel, though.

Well, that about wraps it up for this week. I'll be back with four more stories next week! (Including that Vonnuget story!)

Yeah. Dimension X was totally the "Twilight Zone" / "Black Mirror" of it's time. I used to listen to these as a teen and get so creeped out.
