@WR: I second your nomination.

I've only used clip-on bow ties.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Austin Rich:

@MarkTime: True story: in our neighborhood, there has been an ice cream truck making the rounds. It's the same one that's always active in our neighborhood, but way out of season. It's terrible weather right now, rainy and cold. Plus: Pandemic. But that dude is determined. He must need the money, bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
chresti:

My ex usta wear fat ties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Krys O.:

@chresti: When ties were as wide as the lapels, I bet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Handy Haversack:

I was really hoping to use this stupid pandemic to make sure I never wear a tie again, but now we are invited to a wedding in May. I was really hoping to be done with those, too!

Kilt, combat boots, WFMU T-shirt, corduroy blazer. Seems formal enough, crap damn it!
Avatar 👻 8:15pm
MarkTime:

@Austin Rich: After all these years in Sow Cal I'm still getting used to ice cream trucks in February. Our guy drives through here too fast ... slower, even if less often he'd get more business
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Austin Rich:

"He Dubbed me good..."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Austin Rich:

Our guy is slow, his truck is loud, and I've never investigated the selection. I'm sort of shocked, as our street doesn't have a lot of kids on it. Who knows the logic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
chresti:

Krys. yes, and later, when skinny ties were the rage. he would receive all kinds of whacky ties from friends (and me)
Avatar 👻 8:18pm
Mr Fab:

what was that name, Ironing Board Slim?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Handy Haversack:

I've yet to hear the RZA ice-cream-truck jingle in the wild, only on WFMU. Despite the fact that summer nights here include a massive stoner party at the gas station on the corner as all the ice-cream-truck drivers fuel them up before putting them away for the night.

A million stories in the naked city.
Avatar 8:18pm
David in California:

MarkTime, your story reminds me of the Morecambe and Wise sketch where Morecambe hears a police siren going by and says "He won't sell much ice cream going at that speed."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Krys O.:

Ironing Board Sam. His keyboard stand was an ironing board.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Austin Rich:

I've stuck with the Bow Tie thing consistently since the 90's, but I wore a selection of stuff before that. But I did find a photo of me at 5 wearing a bow tie, so I know it's pretty deep in my soul at this point.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

The most angry I've ever seen a roommate of mine is when I put on the Shaggs one morning to clean the house, and he came down from upstairs to tell me I needed to turn off that garbage or we would have to fight.

I turned it off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Krys O.:

Shaggs shared that quality with Stravinsky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm

Avatar 👻 8:23pm

@David in California: Morecambe and Wise sounds vaguely familiar ... did they run on some PBS stations in the States? Monty Python was the Gateway Drug but I really learned to love Dave Allen, Peter Cook, etc thanks to PBS

Hey, Franco!!!!
Avatar 8:27pm
David in California:

MarkTime, during the early eighties, some of the independent stations that had success with Benny Hill tried showing Morecambe and Wise, without the same success, probably because Morecambe and Wise were more subtle than Benny Hill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Franco Twinkie:

One of these days I'll spell your name right. Sheesh!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Austin Rich:

My memory of Benny Hill was that my dad would change the channel if I came in when it was on, to the point where I was very curious about it.

As an adult, when I could finally watch it on my own, I was underwhelmed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Krys O.:

@Mr. Fab: They were half of the dB's.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Austin Rich:

Clearly a pretty good half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Krys O.:

My dad loved Benny Hill because it was louche. He also loved The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin with Leonard Rossiter. PBS played a lot of British comedies.
Avatar 👻 8:31pm
MarkTime:

My dad was too much into Benny Hill, but for me a little was enough ha
Avatar 8:31pm
David in California:

MarkTime, the independent stations that showed Benny Hill and Morecambe and Wise in Oakland and Sacramento also became Fox affiliates.
Avatar 👻 8:31pm

Benny Hill was awesome when youre a kid! It was on late, after mom went to bed. Nekkid, naughty stuff.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Dad liked Monty Python to a certain extent.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Perhaps. I felt a little weird as a 20-something watching it, trying to figure it out. But I was head over heels for Python by then, so it sort of didn't matter.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Krys O.:

I think my father's absolute favorite was The Two Ronnies.
Avatar 8:37pm

Austin Rich, when the original "Willard" came out, Bob Wilkins promoted it with a contest. If you won, you got to see "Willard" in the theatre, alone.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm

Sunday mornings from one of the Buffalo stations (late 70's early 80's) was Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, The Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton. What a contrast to the Saturday morning cartoon fare.
