Tony, I will confess that they've never lured me back since.

in Ray Davies' book, an autobiography that takes place in the future, in which he astutely replaces "the government" with "the corporation", he laments that all drummers have been replaced by drum machines - dehumanizing music.
...which of course it does - but if he'd only seen the shitball coming down the road called "autotune".
he must hate it as much as i do.

Did anyone hear a recent Ergo Phizmiz release that was directed at Van Morrison and the latter's professed hatred of electronic music?
Avatar 12:49pm
TDK60:

I shoulda taped this show; sigh... (Maybe I could send Tony a blank tape later in the sluggish post.)
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Methinks the secret of proper drum machine usage is to use it as a unique instrument in and of itself, not as a replacement for a drummer. Just as a mellotron isn't a replacement for a string section. Ikue Mori, for example, is a master at using the drum machine in a unique way.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
David (in London):

Ah, Cultural Amnesia, these guys I know. John Balance wrote a few songs for them.

@TDK60: archive.org...
  12:55pm

yeah, I like Cultural Amnesia. The VOD release of their material is the only thing I have by them, but they had lots of cassettes, I believe.
Avatar 12:57pm
TDK60:

Yvang, thanks. Maybe later I'll grab that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
coelacanth∅:

Tony (@1250) i agree.
i also did grow to appreciate a lot of music with drum machines (wall of voodoo, suicide, wailing souls and lots of other reggae...)
but in these cases almost always think it would've been better with real percussion.
  1:03pm
Mark Williams:

hey now. Do we know if this CTI cut was anthologized later?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
David (in London):

The Sisters of Mercy used a drum machine well. They made it part of the sound, in a Suicide way, not a replacement.
Avatar 1:04pm
Sean from Austin:

Is there anywhere to download a digital copy of this compilation?
  1:05pm
Mark Williams:

@coalacanth - yeah, on the reggae front, I know that Lee Perry got a hold of a drum machine relatively early in the '70s and used it here and there.
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi, Sean! Thanks to Yvang, I can say, yes, there is: archive.org...
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Apologies: The CTI is just now starting. The Paul Kelday was in two parts, and I jumped the gun, playlist-wise
Avatar 1:07pm
Sean from Austin:

archive.org... found it i think
  1:08pm
Mark Williams:

on their early '90s releases, Shockheaded Peters used a drum machine that was hooked into a sequencer and they said it would react to other instruments, making it almost disappear into the overall sound
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm

Drummers were in short supply in LA in the late .70s. The drummers I knew were often drumming for more than one band at any given time
  1:18pm
Mark Williams:

I think I remember this comp now, or I remember seeing mention of it. It's a solid representation of a lot of the usual suspects of the Industrial music scene, but with a twist (well, Side A to a degree).
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape comes with a booklet, by the way, with a page for each artist. Very zine-style graphics.

Wild ride on that Surge tape! Dig it!
Avatar 1:36pm
TDK60:

Was "Sudden Surge" a 135-minute, or longer cassette, Tony?
  1:37pm
Mark Williams:

i mean, maybe not "common" in the way Beer/400 Blows did, but at some point I noticed that a fair number of acts seemed to naturally grow into a sound that made lots of nods to the "Club." Whether it was 23 Skidoo, ACR, Test Dept, Bourbonese Qualk, Coil, Severed Heads... there's probably more I am not thinking of now (oh, Chris & Cosey, of course). I think there was a certain symmetry in doing so for many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
chresti:

A lot of tracks on one cassette!
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: It's a 90-minute cassette ... and they use every minute.
  1:39pm
Mark Williams:

400 Blows stood out for me, though, because he (Andrew Beer) really didn't hang around too long doing tracks like what you just played. He went and got himself a heavier drum machine and did an amazing cover of a disco song ("Movin") and that was that.
  1:41pm
Mark Williams:

i don't want to meet this boy.
