Handy Haversack:

Not much family to speak of, Son Of Pantz. August Derleth did a lot of the estate and literary management after HPL's death. Even in the sixties, though, using HPL's name seems pretty culturally tone deaf (though he was a LOT less part of the cultural landscape then so maybe it just felt edgy-nerdy?).

And I'm saying that as someone who has read pretty much every word of his published fiction and poetry.

There are some very interesting authors publishing cosmic-horror SF right now who are actively decolonizing Lovecraft and the Lovecraft story. I have been enjoying a few of them a lot. I mean, I will always treasure a lot of his writing, but as you say, the Big Issues are there and need to be confronted honestly.
