Regarding home taping -- the record companies were worried that DAT would cut into CD sales, so they implemented a tax on recorders and blank media. But since the majors, like Sony, owned hardware and software, they essentially paid themselves a tax. Nice!

Zoom went the needle right across the face of the record, out of the grooves and into your heart. And spleen. Took about two hours just to get the information off, another hour to get rid of the needle jumps
