Nice to see you in the chat, Listener Robert and egould!

That could be, Listener Robert! The show does tend to do that. Though, what exactly that is referencing, I'm not sure. (Did the actor who plays Suzy botch lines a lot?)

No, I'm saying her function in Mr. Holiday's office couldn't be to pronounce things wrong and make other mistakes, but her function as a character on "Box 13" is
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm

Ah! A better observation, for sure.
  6:06pm

The premise of that episode is pretty neat.

Our story takes a "Most Dangerous Game" sort of turn.

Charles:

Hehe nice commercial
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Austin Rich:

It's really easy to edit, "Box 13," as the music cues that transition into and out of the breaks is always the same, and there's usually an announcer already added in. The other shows I run are not as well produced... or, at least, not as easy to edit.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

"I'm not a dame, I'm a secretary!" One of my fave Suzy lines.
  6:19pm
Ellen Lovebug:

This is the best-produced radio serial I've encountered. Excellent choice. Also the many possibilities for a king to also be a captive -- could be a king card in a deck in some kind of game, could be a hostage, plus isn't that a plot of a movie, a king and a prisoner who look alike trade places?
  6:20pm
Ellen Lovebug:

A little zip -- hah. Lion in a zoo! Great answer.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Austin Rich:

You can hear the "crackle" on this recording a little more than you usually can on Box 13 this week. Which is odd, but still very listenable, compared to other radio dramas of the time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Austin Rich:

Most likely, the original transcription disc for this episode has a little "noise" on it. At least, to my ears, that sounds like a needle encountering "static" rather than a problem with some other aspect of the recording.
  6:23pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I *love* the between-scenes interlude music
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I'm with you, Ellen. The music and production on this show is just SO good, by comparison to a lot of other dramas of the era. I suspect that Alan Ladd would expect nothing less than the best, as this was HIS production company.
  6:25pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Is he a sadistic psychopath setting up a live snuff film? That's what it sounds like. Ugh.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I think there's not a lot to recommend Winthrop.
  6:28pm
Charles:

Winthrop's the one who lost faith in humanity? That's funny.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah... there's some nice dark comedy in this one, for sure.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Austin Rich:

"Good Night, Suzy," should be the name of a retrospective book about "Box 13."
  6:29pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That was an unexpected wrap!
I'd read it!

SW:

A bee's trumpet would be tiny
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

I think it's a song about bubble bees, not by them? But I could be wrong.

I think this particular episode of "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen" is a little short... thus so much music this week.
  6:34pm
Charles:

Some of them even plays the clarhornet.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

We are FINALLY getting to the end of the KANG storyline! This and one more episode...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

Pretty great sound this week.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

This episode suggests that Neilson - the only other named character we've found on the ship - is the person who does all the calling and announcements on the ship.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

(Which means you hear his voice at the beginning and end of most episodes.)
  6:39pm
Charles:

Oh I thought it was Red for some reason.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

I thought so too, but that's what this episodes seems to imply.

Though, I suspect it is the same actor doing both voices...
  6:39pm
Listener Robert:

I'm just wondering how easy it is in practice to distinguish Acme beer from Acme shampoo.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Austin Rich:

You're right, Listener Robert; all Acme Products are made in the same factory, and there's probably not much quality control.
  6:41pm
SW:

viscosity
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

Well, I guess that was supposed to be Neilson and Red in the same scene, so different actor, even. Hmmmm....
Avatar 6:42pm
Mr Fab:

Best sound quality yet for a Scarlet Queen ep.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Austin Rich:

Likely that both Red and Neilson have to yell a lot of the Queen.

I barely did any EQ this week, Mr. Fab. I suspect, since we are getting to the end, that these episodes were "cared for" more than the others.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Austin Rich:

I do appreciate that they are all sort of shocked that there's actually something there to retrieve.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

Red calls Phil "cute."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Austin Rich:

A bit of a "Treasure Island" riff, here.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Austin Rich:

You might need Acme Brand Beer to see those mermaids that were mentioned.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Austin Rich:

And, of course, Phil has to reference Treasure Island, too. At least we've all read the same books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Scott67:

Tin of hash! That's mighty hospitable!
  6:48pm
Listener Robert:

No makeup man could've done as well, indeed -- that's why it's radio.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Austin Rich:

@Scott67: that is pretty gourmet, compared to what he's been eating recently.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Austin Rich:

The best part of radio is that you can create the illusion of better FX than most cheap movies.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect, if you are writing a sailing radio show, that you want to be careful with any "pirate" and "sea-faring" tropes that you may deploy.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Austin Rich:

But then, Red yells there. So perhaps they both share that responsibility? Hard to say...
Avatar 6:57pm
Charles from Québec:

You say that episode was shorter than the others? Felt longer (in a good way). Action packed!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Austin Rich:

Well, shorter by a few minutes. But a lot happens!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Austin Rich:

And the book about the Scarlet Queen should be called, "After You, Mate. After You."
  7:00pm
SW:

I like this show when it actually seems like something is happening instead of random stuff in the port of the week.
  7:07pm
SW:

👋
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Austin Rich:

At this time in radio drama history, a long on-going serial was more geared for children, or for the day-time soaps. So a 30 Minute Drama like this, where there was a sort of evolving storyline for 21 episodes, was sort of an anomaly. (And, not popular; after episode 21, the show switches to self-contained stories, which was the case for most dramas.) I'm always looking for more exceptions that are outside of kids serials and soaps.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Austin Rich:

One common thing at the time was that books were often serialized in short-runs. (Like a mini-series.) But, of course, they were never on-going.
Avatar 7:12pm
Mr Fab:

Really? Not just serialized in magazines? Interesting.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Austin Rich:

Well, usually they were well-known books, not usually new. So stuff like "Frankenstein" and "Dracula," other stuff like that.

That would have been a good use of the medium, but I think that was pretty forward thinking in the 40's and 50's.
Avatar 7:16pm
Charles from Québec:

This is all very interesting.

Whoops! I usually edit out all references to the "daily" nature of Chandu for our purposes. Missed that one!
Avatar 7:18pm

It's alright Austin. I guess the only way to fix this is to make Dimestore a daily show now :)

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

Welles is pretty great, but he's done some real crap, too. (On the radio and in film.) I've sort of come to enjoy the crappier stuff, just because it's such an anomaly. (Especially some of his drunk radio performances... strangely magical, in a sort of uneasy way.)
