Cassettes are back, what's next wax cylinders? I get LPs they are long lasting if well cared for but tapes are so...mortal. They are destined to die its so sad. You need to be hyper vigilant and God fobid the tape player in the car eats it. What are the ADVANTAGES of tape cassettes? I get it, they are small, they fit in a pocket but WHAT ELSE?

Tapes are just a fun collectable physical format, that's their primary selling point. I don't collect them, but the aesthetic is fun and they're cheap and scratch that tactile collector itch.

WildNeil: #1 advantage of cassette is that it is very cheap to produce a small run. That's why so much noise/weirdo music is released on cassette (in editions of 25 or so)

Tape - pioneered in fact largely by Nazis - was indispensable to most every revolution in Recording after the electric microphone.
Recording affordably @ home onto cassettes was HUGE.
Boy they sure blew it with CDs huh. Starting with using 16bit sampling for no good sonic reason whatsoever ...selling the entire Culture back to everyone before they figured out how to Mix or Master for them ...keeping them @ $16 ...you name it.

@KFHP Those microcassettes have some of the best fidelity of them all. The tape itself is the same size, but since the cassette is so much smaller (and shorter) the recording speed is slower and there is less torque.

Also - did answering machines use only one 'side' of a tape? That would double your recording surface... Tho I think a faster tape speed gives more recording surface - if more complicated transit mechanics. Much depends on the quality of your machine for that...

Way, way back in the day, VHS Hi-FI was indeed the poor man's near-digital-equivalent for audio. S/N was about 85db.

Woe unto ye though if anything degrades on the tape to affect tracking quality. It must be perfect to decode the (FM encoded) HiFI track. Otherwise you get the straight analog VHS audio — which at about 40db S/N — is even worse than cassette.

Come to think of it a friend made me a mixed CD back in 2000. Christian rock and also a track off of Electriclarryland from Butthole Surfers.
@Ami-was she an ex at the time? Maybe that's why?

He had a vibe that could translate from weird biker to weird pirate easily. He would have been a lot better than Depp in those movies

Truth, ultraD!

Was he not a weird pirate.

Creamo Coyl:

I gotta admit that watching a video of Johnny Depp and Jeff fuckin Beck playing a Killing Joke song was all kindsa weird mash-up. Didn't taste particularly good, but yeah.

I wanna like Depp - he seems to have the right tastes in everything - but it's just that Hollywood guy trying to attach his trademark to everything Kewl seemed too deliberate ...& I mean - a long time ago. Scissorhands is good & all that...

...& JeffBeck on one hand a Gawd - & on the other like a model for one of the SpinalTap ...like specifically...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm

Was the Beck thing better than the band he had with Gibby and that Red Hot Chili Pepper that made River Phoenix kill himself (I'm assuming that's how it happened)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I mean - I'll always wanna be JeffBeck. I diddle Gittar. Just saying.

have you tried this tik tok thing — put a little balsamic vinegar in seltzer water. tastes just like a coke i swear. plain balsamic & seltzer are fine, but i have experimented and cherry seltzer w/fig balsamic vinegar is even better. its my summer chill drank.
