Technically actually really precise & even strong with good lungs - tho' the high register makes people think otherwise. An archetypal kind of Pop voice. Sometimes her versions of a song seemed performative & lacked affectation by comparison - but otherwise I'm often surprised by how expressive - & certainly sensual she was. Which surprises no one. :)
	5:11pm Julie: although she has some power I think she can be very quiet, I get the impression they boosted her volume quite a bit. My Olivia albums have always seemed "HOT" to me

Friends of mine from the high school, including a young lady who played Sandy, performed in the junior college's production of Grease. This would have been around '80, '81... Wish I could see that show again.

	5:29pm Big Hot Sky: I listened to all these songs as a wee one, so the musicality of the phonemes, the vocal tone, and the arrangements were what registered. I had zero adult context, so no particular meaning accrued from the lyrics…what a trip it is to revisit these sounds!

	5:31pm Dean: Fans of sopranos, don't miss the sublime Conchita Supervia. She was in fact a mezzo, but her voice was as radiant as a stellar soprano. Her gig was opera and recitals of Spanish songs. I have no doubt that were she alive today she'd be a "cross-over" celebrity.

	5:37pm Big Hot Sky: In my kiddie innocence, I wonder if ONJ’s crisp final consonants led me to expect similar diction from less white-bread singers. Ha. And voila, Olivia en Francais, sounding nuttin like Francoise Hardy.
	5:39pm adamdoesit: Hot vocals for hot weather. Julie, Juliana Hatfield's "Sings Olivia Newton John" record (which I rather like) sounds "hot" in the vocals to me, too. Maybe that's part of the tribute.
	5:40pm Dean: The cover of 1972's Olivia, due I suppose to the typography, looks like it would have appeared in the mid-'80s. New Wave, even.
	5:41pm Rich in Washington: My (then future) wife Coco and I were out on a date at a restaurant when Diana died. I noticed the waitress going from table to table, quietly telling each patron something and when she got to us, she told us. People are weird.

There'd be a lead DJ, but other DJs could each nominate a song from someone who passed for them to play. Sometimes it's hard to keep up. Probably Rock & Soul would be a good home.

But then I don't like acknowledgment of birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, driver's license expirations...you get the picture. I do love that people wrote music of celebration that for hundreds of years we have repeatedly performed.

Now I like that I can listen through the overblown production to hear what at least some of those artists were trying to produce.

Sometimes her versions of a song seemed performative & lacked affectation by comparison - but otherwise I'm often surprised by how expressive - & certainly sensual she was. Which surprises no one. :)

But then I don't like acknowledgment of birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, driver's license expirations...you get the picture. I do love that people wrote music of celebration that for hundreds of years we have repeatedly performed.

Now I like that I can listen through the overblown production to hear what at least some of those artists were trying to produce.
