@StringOfPerils, I feel the same about Green Day.

@DanFA, I hear you. I remember reading a Robert Christgau review (a depressing hobby of mine at times) about a Shonen Knife album and the guy said something along the lines of these are jingles and not catchy songs like those by Ramones. But I thought to myself that SK songs really were catchy, just like Ramones songs. I've loved them always.

Reading art/music criticism should probably be like bird-watching: Just let it fly by, admire its exotic plumage, wonder where it came from and where it's going. Shrug, and put on some music, and enjoy it.
  10:44am
Mr. Oxford:

@DanFA, yep...Billy Joel was known to rip up Christgau's reviews, Lou Reed called him out on of his live albums hilariously and a pre-Vampire Weekend Ezra Koenig as a student wrote a long blog article about how music criticism does not help (especially Christgau's). I used to read his reviews because some were hilarious but over time I've also stopped paying attention to music critiscm. I spend more of that time on WFMU actually listening to music.

I just had to share something. I was driving north on Ocean Ave in Jersey City with my father on Saturday and "Unicorn" came on. He hadn't heard that song in literally 40 - 50 years. He grew up in that area of Jersey City so it brought back all sorts of memories for him. Now the both of us are listening to Irish Rover songs. Thanks, Roger. This is why I love WFMU.
