I have deviated from the starting time by 2 minutes. I hope that is in the spirit of the show.

This is a great idea for a show, David.

Hi David, LG, those reading or yet to arrive.
Avatar 7:18pm
Listener Gregory:

Interesting switch on the title here. Or could it have been a record company error? I remember how much this record puzzled me in 1982, just after I had gotten used to Ornette's acoustic groups.
Hello, @WR.
Avatar 7:20pm
Observations:

He seems to have started calling it Job Mob then switched to Mob Job. Not sure of how/why
Avatar 7:49pm
Listener Gregory:

I realize he is controversial, but I feel that there is value in Ornette Coleman's work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
WR:

Ornette controversial?

I've decided that I'm not going to read any more by or about Greil Marcus until I see a few photos of him between the age of 16 to 19.

WR:

This Collette Polynesia album is so fun and lovely.

Listener Gregory:

I am excited to say that I have never heard of him or it. In 1962 I was very conservative about music; and also, I wasn't tall enough to reach the radio. I believe I did know most of the words to "How Much Is That Doggy in the Window." (Please don't test me now.)

Dean:

I really only dove into OC with this Song X.

A story I've recounted before here: In early 2019 I moved my elderly mother from Southern California to an assisted living facility just blocks from my house in Berkeley. A month or so into her stay I dropped by to learn that the staff was celebrating Ornette's birthday. They played Shape of Jazz to Come for the residents, most of whom were 80+. My mom was 90. It appeared to me that everybody dug it. So, "controversial"? I don't think so.

Listener Gregory:

I heard Metheny and Ornette play a concert in the tour supporting this album, and it was one of those experiences that was so intense you later begin to wonder if your memory is just exaggerating. At one point, Metheny was filling the auditorium with syn-guitar, with Ornette sailing above all that, and I had an out-of-body experience. I have never been able to find a video or recording of any shows from this tour.
Avatar 8:13pm
Listener Gregory:

Haden, Denardo, and DeJohnette were in the band, I believe.

LG, about what year? I've got several X live recordings.

@WR, it was shortly after the album came out, maybe a couple of months? I had listened to it quite a few times before the concert.
  8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

The concert I heard was in New Haven.

This Cassiber is quite interesting.

I am 75% certain that "carmina" is pronounced CAR-mee-nuh, not car-MEE-nuh. Hence, "You say CARmina, I say carMIna... Let's call the whole thing Orff."
  9:04pm
Listener Gregory:

@WR, !!!
  9:05pm
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, well done! But I won’t listen to it no matter how it’s pronounced.

Nobody should deprive him or herself of the "real" Carmina Burana. Start with the Rene Clemencic Consort: https://www.discogs.com/release/4195263-Clemencic-Consort-Ren%C3%A9-Clemencic-Carmina-Burana

I once got together with a friend and listened to this album in alternation with the Ornette originals, while drinking single malt scotch. Yes, I once had friends! Anyway, that was fun.

that does sound fun @LG!

I saw this Spy vs Spy band years ago, at the old Knitting Factory (Tim Berne handled the otter alto). It was intense...
And, hi all!

@doctorj, you did not!!! Oh, man, you are making me envious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

@LG, I looked back, that Ornette/Metheny show you saw had me drooling!

That does not make us even! Living in the hinterlands for 20 years kept me away from the Knit and its big-city equivalents for too long.

always wondered what Ornette’s thoughts on spy vs spy record were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

On the other hand, it's probably lovely where you live (it ain't Central Joisey...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
doctorjazz:

Only caught Ornette once (if I recall, he stopped playing live gigs for a while, as he saw what rock stars got paid, and felt he was criminally underpaid...he did have a point...). It was at Town Hall, and it was 1 set with this original quartet, then a set with Prime Time (ended with everyone on stage).

@doctorj, isn’t there an album of such a concert? Two CDs, one electric and one acoustic? Maybe not. There IS a late quartet reunion concert on disc, I believe.
