Adamdoesit: there is a flock (?) of 40 or more cormorants sleeping in a few trees overlooking the estuary when I walk in the morning, usually before sunrise. In their sleep they make sounds like that deep deep rumble associated w/ lions. Startling.

Handy Haversack:

Sem, I don't have any my photos online, but there's an "island" in the East River, U Thant, which is made of rubble from digging the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. Years back an artist erected a metal armature and hung prayer flags on it. Now it's a cormorant and gull (but mainly cormorant) nesting spot. There's a little eddy there where you can tuck in a couple of canoes out of the current and watch them, which is really fantastic during fledgling season.

Maybe I can find some pix ...

Cormorants are getting to a problem in some parts of the Chesapeake. They've gone from one nesting pair in the late 70's to over 4,000 now. There's a section of Smith Island where they are sharing nesting space with brown pelicans that is now overrun and quite gross from what I understand

Good pics, thanks.
The flock arrives when the herring run up the estuary from the Bay of Fundy. That's in mid-August. The birds are still fishing, mid-October.
The indigenous people, translated from their language, call here The Place of Bountiful Fish.

Phillippe: the flocks kill the trees they nest in, having no cormorant-friendly port-a-pottys.

@swivs it has its areas but there's a lot of decay. some parts of towns are so bad that they let the feral cats run wild to keep the rat population down. My son did some volunteer work for an organization that would drive through the Pimlico neighborhood a couple times a week leaving bowls of cat food around. Scary freakin' area

my theory is that the reason there are really good/cool people in nj is because the majority sucks so much...same with ie kansas or ohio, arizona, alabama (etc)...the conscious people find each-other and become extra good in response to the overwhelming suckiness.
