I contend that diaereses, ligatures, and such were all deprecated because of the limited character set of typewriters. Now that 'Weʼre not living in the Middle Ages: we have electricity!' as Eric Bogosian's torture-instructer put it, we are freed of that. The SwiftKey phone/tablet keyboard application is particularly good for this, lacking only the ligatures.

I contend that diaereses, ligatures, and such were all deprecated because of the limited character set of typewriters. Now that 'Weʼre not living in the Middle Ages: we have electricity!' as Eric Bogosian's torture-instructer put it, we are freed of that. The SwiftKey phone/tablet keyboard application is particularly good for this, lacking only the ligatures.
