Standard American food is unbelievably extreme when it comes to sugar and sodium. I had a friend who spent a year in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 80s and Ill never forget how he reacted to returning to the US. The food was inedible to him --- his system could not process the sugar and sodium levels.
