Just came across an interesting Greil Marcus quote: "After the mid ‘60s, individual virtuosity undermined group identity and a single sound—realizing one’s true self as separate from or over a group replaced the Beatle-ideal of realizing oneself as part of a group. The idea that all individuals are incomplete was replaced by the belief in self-perfection. Thus, guitar solos—as opposed to Phil Manzanera’s accents in Roxy Music’s “More Than This,” which mean more to me, open up a deeper emotional well, than anything Jimi Hendrix ever played." That sells Hendrix short, as he was a master at comping, but I see his point.

right on, Zipper. i agree with his assessment (not that it's *his* revelation ...) but it's obviously not all-encompassing, and yeah i think he's pretty ignorant in the Hendrix department!

Ian McDonald, who i do not think highly of overall, but did analyze and articulate some things quite beautifully, said something similar in his book "revolution in the head"

@zipperhead: there was so much room for hendrix to move and create sound in a group. miles wanted him for his group, and was w/in one week of being able to jam w/ him in London. They agreed get together to record when jimi died. so, miles had to 'settle' for john mclaughlin and pete cosey, instead...

Zipperhead it's a book ostensibly about the beatles, and superficially worshiping the beatles... but his assessment of the beatles almost every step of the way is maddeningly presumptuous to say the least.
his strong point, and there's a lot of it in this book, is analyzing the 60s, and culture in general -especially as reflected by pop music. he doesn't specifically make the point you made ^, but in a roundabout way -as he trashed hard rock, metal, power trios, and basically the whole direction away from a "true rhythm guitar".

ooh another one from the new bin I've been waiting to hear, this Metal Preyers! apparently it's "a narrative soundtrack to a self-penned fairytale about a father and daughter's voyage through a swamp inhabited by gremlins and crater creatures. The idea and most of the album's vocals came from Hackett's six-year-old daughter Nyasha, who used a phone's voice notes app to record sketches of her singing, then spun into full tracks by Hackett who contorts them into robotic howls and disembodied forest folk wails."

back when I was functionally blind (until my surgeries in june/july), i adjusted my contrast and color settings on my monitor. Now, w/ a new laptop w/ the factory settings, I can tell that color schemes are all wrong on my old laptop. For example, on my old laptop, the comments board background is lilac, while on the new one it's more of a primrose. Are either in the correct ballpark?
Avatar 11:32pm
Sara A:

hi rw ! yay, thank you ! glad you finally got it
Avatar 11:36pm
Sara A:

ngh - those are both correct, the background for the text is close to lilac and the page background color is close to a primrose
  11:37pm
rw:

So THAT's the difference between Lilac and Primrose.
Avatar 11:39pm
planetjulie:

Avatar 11:42pm
northguineahills:

merci, sara! I was leaning towards that, as my avatar looks more correct as I originally made it (when my original eyes worked). I have to start graphic design and present infographics w/ my classes this week, and i'm rather picky when it comes to digitally representing color (or analog, for that matter).

another positive of seeing family, i got the blessing of my brothers to move to nyc (not that i need it, but it makes things smoother). half the reason i left nyc was to be closer to my mother for her physical frailties. now that my nieces are older, my brothers can take care of her w/ her progressing dementia. They just want me to be part of my nieces' life, which I enthusiastically want.
