When a statue was recently stolen from the main square of the central German city of Erfurt, it was more than a mere theft. It was a kidnapping.
The statue was of Bernd das Brot, a hugely popular TV character - a melancholy bread loaf - on German children's channel KLKA.
The channel presented the statue to the city in 2007, and it stood next to the imposing neo-gothic city hall until Jan. 21, when it disappeared.
A group of anarchists claimed responsibility for the abduction, followed by a YouTube video that indicated that the anthropomorphic loaf had joined its members in solidarity.
The anarchists are battling the city over squatting rights, after their evic- tion from an abandoned facto- ry where crema- torium ovens were once con- structed for Nazi death camps. The squatters had opened a literary cafe and organized lecture events at the site, as well as arranged tours.
Naturally, the station and Bernd das Brot creator Tommy Krappweis have called for his safe return - Stockholm syndrome or not. "Kidnapping, even of bread loaves, is the wrong means of achiev- ing political goals," Krappweis says. "Bernd has suffered enough."

1. YOU DON’T NEED PERMISSION TO COVER A SONG

A common misconception in the music industry is that you need to receive permission from the original composer in order to record a cover version of their song. However, US copyright law makes it much easier than that for artists wishing to cover a piece of music.
This is thanks to something known as “compulsory licensing.” Compulsory licensing basically states that the owners of a song can’t deny you releasing a cover song (your own interpretation). However, you must do two things if you wish to go this route.
1. First, you must notify the owner of your intent to cover the song. Once again, this isn’t asking for permission, it simply lets them know what’s going on with their composition.
2. Second, you must pay a specific royalty rate per song being purchased or downloaded. The current royalty rate, per purchase/download, is 9.1 cents for music under 5 minutes. If the song is over 5 minutes the rate is 1.75 cents per minute or a fraction thereof.
