The Specials | Life and Times of a Man called Depression | Encore | Universal Music Operations Limited | 2019 | R.I.P. Terry Hall, (19 March 1959 – 19 December 2022) "Life and Times of a Man called Depression is almost a prequel to Breaking Point. A Terry song, spoken word, rather autobiographical. "One thing I wanted to address was the ups and downs of my head, really," says Hall. "It's me looking back to when I first got properly diagnosed [with bipolar] 11 years ago, looking at that person and seeing how I've changed and how it's now mostly under control, whereas all those years ago it wasn't. It's important, if you've got a voice and people may listen to this, maybe they will understand it a bit more, how you feel – how it all feels, really." The album ends with the glorious We Sell Hope. In recent years the live show encore was All the Time in the World, dedicated to drummer John Bradbury. This is similar and is bittersweet both musically and lyrically. "Looked all around the world, it'd be a beautiful place to live in." "If you look at what the lyrics are saying," says Terry. "It's to be good to each other, because on a basic level, that's all you can do. Treat other people with respect and kindness." The music is exquisite." | 0:00:07 (Pop-up)

Essential Logic | Do You Believe In Christmas? | Fanfare In The Garden | Hiss And Shake Records | 2003 | Prior to the recording of X Ray Spex's debut album, Lora Logic abruptly left the band to follow her own quirky songwriting muse and formed the wonderfully named Essential Logic. Eschewing fast and loud guitars for off-kilter rhythms, "bluesy" sax playing, and forays into dissonance and atonality, Essential Logic created some of the most liberating, exciting music of the early post-punk era. Along with her primitive, exhilarating sax playing, Logic displayed a wildly imaginative vocal style that conflated the subtle eroticism of Patti Smith with the epiglottal spasms of Yoko Ono. Singing, braying, and screeching her implicitly (at times explicitly) feminist lyrics while her backing band crashed and bashed in the background, this was almost a punk version of that most despised of genres, art rock. And while the subjects of most of her songs were serious (alienation, sexism, poverty, urban isolation), there was a bratty tongue-wagging raffishness to Logic (and band) that placed them a cut above the rest." | 0:09:52 (Pop-up)
The Pheromoans | A Freak's Xmas | Does This Guy Stack Up? | Upset The Rhythm | 2012 | THE PHEROMOANS are a six-piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The Pheromoans write songs for the end of the queue, songs that prowl the periphery, songs that stand up on the bus and stare out through the window, blasted through with brilliant sprawling sunshine. | 0:13:16 (Pop-up)
Barnes & Barnes | I Had Sex With Santa | SICKS | Rhino | 1986 | Robert Haimer and Bill Mumy were childhood friends who occasionally performed together on their musical instruments. Following the ending of Mumy's role on the TV series Lost in Space, they shot short films with a Super 8 motion picture camera, dubbed "Art Films". The two began calling each other "Art" in joking reference to these films. They formed the band Barnes & Barnes in 1970. They started when they were about 16 with a two track recorder, making goofy tracks, never meant to be shared. Their surname Barnes was taken from a Bill Cosby comedy routine called "Revenge", in which a character called Junior Barnes throws a slushball at Cosby as a child. They first received airplay on The Dr. Demento Show in 1978. Haimer was a fan of the show and convinced Mumy to "pick a couple of songs and do them right" to send in, the results being their songs "Boogie Woogie Amputee" and "Fish Heads" which they re-did on a Teac four track machine. The latter recording was released as a single on their own Lumania Records in 1979 and remains their best-known song, as well as the most requested song in the history of The Dr. Demento Show. | 0:15:31 (Pop-up)
The Residents | Fire (Santa Dog) | 80 Aching Orphans: 45 years of the Residents | Ralph Records | 1972 | The Residents are an American art collective and art rock band best known for their avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, Meet the Residents (1974), they have released over 60 albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. The group also formed Ralph Records at this time, as a small, independent label to release and promote their own work. In 1972, to inaugurate the new business, the group recorded and pressed the Santa Dog EP, their first recorded output to be released to the public. Designed to resemble a Christmas card from an insurance company, the EP consisted of two 7" singles, one song on each side. | 0:16:58 (Pop-up)
The Goodies | Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me | Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me 7" | Bradley's Records | 1974 | Brooke-Taylor, Garden and Oddie were cast members of the 1960s BBC radio comedy show I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again, which also featured John Cleese, David Hatch and Jo Kendall, and lasted until 1973. I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again resulted from the 1963 Cambridge University Footlights Club revue A Clump of Plinths. After having its title changed to Cambridge Circus, the revue went on to play in the West End in London, England, followed by a tour of New Zealand, then on Broadway in New York City (including an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show). They also took part in various TV shows with other people, including Brooke-Taylor in At Last the 1948 Show (with Cleese, Chapman and Marty Feldman). Brooke-Taylor also took part in Marty (with Marty Feldman, John Junkin and Roland MacLeod). In 1968 Brooke-Taylor appeared with Cleese, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman in How to Irritate People. Garden and Oddie took part in Twice a Fortnight (with Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Jonathan Lynn), before Brooke-Taylor, Garden, and Oddie worked on the late-1960s TV show Broaden Your Mind (of which only about ten minutes survives). | 0:18:38 (Pop-up)

In Hebrew, the word Manginah is Hebrew for “melody”. Founded in 1994, and partnered with Hillel, Manginah sings a mixture of Jewish, Israeli pop, and English songs. DJ Formaldehyde | Merry Christmas - The Bombshelter Brigade | Christmas At The Bombshelter | Bombshelter | 1986 | Originally recorded for the Christmas at the Bombshelter compilation, Andreas Gregor and David Rout (!Bang Elektroniks) got together and took some liberties with Daniel Miller's classic Warm Leatherette! Because it was a novelty track, they decided to use the name The Bombshelter Brigade, as that was what a local record store employee called them, whenever they were putting up posters for their label. | 0:26:14 (Pop-up)

Strangely, this album is not on Discogs, despite the fact it seems to have existed for 15 years. This is the laid-back bangra-inspired project of Martin Atkins. Martin Atkins is currently in the hospital, recovering from major surgery that he had yesterday. Any support sent to support any of his work & endeavours during this time are doubly appreciated. His original message: "Hi Friends, please don't be alarmed by the following... After pain, numbness, an ER visit, and an emergency MRI last week, I have been scheduled for urgent surgery on Wednesday, December 21st to try and fix some problems with the nerves in my spine and begin re-fixing problems with my back. It seems that after years of crazy drumming and touring, my body needs a breather. I’ve had back pain for several years now, and in the last month it’s caught up with me and become critical... Keep Martin the F*ck IN Bed! As I hunker down for surgery prep, I know that I’ll be inclined to rush my recovery to get back to action, so we’ve come up with some ways you can support me, the museum, and keep me the f*ck in bed!... //////////////////// A monthly subscription donation to the Museum - You can choose any amount you'd like, and can change or cancel your subscription at any time. Stompin Tom Connors | Merry Christmas Everybody | Merry Christmas Everybody | Ole | 2017 | Charles Thomas "Stompin' Tom" Connors, was a Canadian country and folk singer-songwriter. Focusing his career exclusively on his native Canada, he is credited with writing more than 300 songs and has released four dozen albums, with total sales of nearly four million copies. He had a tumultuous relationship with the Canadian music industry and CBC. He was a heavy drinker and smoker, and grew up in the poorest part of St. John, New Brunswick. He put his country first and foremost, and wrote songs about the national identity from the everyman's viewpoint. Though of another time, he remains a national treasure... | 1:06:03 (Pop-up)
Anne Murray | Snowbird | This Way Is My Way | Capitol | 1969 | Murray was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts and also the first to earn a Gold record for one of her signature songs, "Snowbird". She is often cited as one of the female Canadian artists who paved the way for other international Canadian success stories such as k.d. lang, Céline Dion, and Shania Twain. As with Stompin' Tom...she is a Canadian treasure. | 1:08:18 (Pop-up)
John Denver | Please Daddy, Don't Get Drunk This Christmas | Rocky Mountain Christmas | RCA | 1975 | Farewell Andromeda is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter John Denver, released in June 1973. It's distressingly upbeat, one major chord bounding into the next, Denver yodelling a little halfway through the chorus in what seems like a desperate attempt to add a little levity. It's so breezy that nobody has been able to tap into the agony ever since. Given his ain't-life-somethin' reputation, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Denver didn't write "Please, Daddy…" himself. But the original songwriters weren't known for their pitch-black social realism either. The song is credited to Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, the then-married couple best known for fronting The Starland Vocal Band and penning the group's massive, nitrous-happy ode to daytime sex, "Afternoon Delight." | 1:10:30 (Pop-up)
Larry Costa | Six Cups Of Eggnog | Christmas Crooner | Self-Released | 2016 | An average of 135 million lbs (61 million kg) of eggnog is consumed every year in America alone. It is derived from a medieval beverage called "Posset". Robert Mitchum has one of the best recipes for this boozy, viscous treat. George Washington has been known to have been a lover of eggnog and would regularly serve it to guests. “One quart cream, one quart milk, one dozen tablespoons sugar, one pint brandy, 1/2 pint rye whiskey, 1/2 pint Jamaica rum, and 1/4 pint sherry.” The Eggnog Riot, a.k.a. The Grog Mutiny, was a Christmas soiree gone very wrong at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1826. | 1:13:16 (Pop-up)
Jacob MIller & Inner Circle | All I Want For Ismas | Natty Christmas | Dubshot Records | 2015 | Jacob Miller was a Jamaican reggae artist and Rastafari from Mandeville, Jamaica. His first recording session was with the famous Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd in the late 1960s. While pursuing a prolific solo career, he became the lead singer for the reggae group Inner Circle. In March 1980, Jacob Miller went with Bob Marley and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell to Brazil, to celebrate Island opening new offices in South America. Not long after returning to Jamaica Sunday, 23 March 1980, Miller and one of his sons died in a car accident on Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica. Jacob Miller was the cousin of British reggae artist Maxi Priest. Every year his Christmas Album goes on heavy rotation during the holiday season in Jamaica, and is enjoyed amongst Jamaicans abroad as well. | 1:15:39 (Pop-up)
Toots & the Maytals | Christmas Feeling Ska | Christmas Greetings From Studio One | Studio One | 2002 | The Maytals, known from 1972 to 2020 as Toots and the Maytals, are a Jamaican musical group, one of the best known ska and rocksteady vocal groups. The Maytals were formed in the early 1960s and were key figures in popularizing reggae music.Frontman Toots Hibbert, who died in 2020,[was considered a reggae pioneer on par with Bob Marley. His soulful vocal style was compared to Otis Redding, and led him to be named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Singers. Their 1968 single "Do the Reggay" was the first song to use the word "reggae", coining the name of the genre and introducing it to a global audience. The Oxford English Dictionary credits Toots and the Maytals in the etymology of the word "Reggae".According to Island Records founder Chris Blackwell "The Maytals were unlike anything else ... sensational, raw and dynamic." | 1:18:37 (Pop-up)
Patrice | Last Christmas | Patrice Presents Rocksteady Christmas | Supow Music | 2021 | Upon its initial release in 1984, "Last Christmas" spent five consecutive weeks at number two in the UK Singles Chart—it was held off the top spot at Christmas by Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (on which Michael also performed). After many chart runs in subsequent years, which included three more weeks at number two, and which saw the recording become part of RCA Records' catalogue, the song finally reached number one in the UK Singles Chart on New Year's Day 2021. This song is much maligned but it is one of the best holiday tunes ever written. I will die on that hill. Also, if you're playing Whamageedon this year...you are not disqualified because this is a COVER, not the original! ;-) | 1:21:02 (Pop-up)

Dolly Mixture | Everything And More | Remember This: The Singles Collection 1980-1984 | For Us Records | 1982 / 2011 | Dolly Mixture was a British post-punk band formed in 1978 by bassist and vocalist Debsey Wykes, guitarist Rachel Bor, and drummer Hester Smith. They started out as complete amateurs (popular rumour had it that they first got involved into the music business as the then girlfriends of The Damned members, though it was only Rachel Bor and Captain Sensible who were a couple). Although they had their taste of Top 40 success as the backing vocals for the Captain Sensible's hit "Wot", as a band they remained neglected by the media and the general public alike. In 1984, near the end of their run, the group self-released a double album of demo tracks, which was re-released in 1995. Debsey and Hester went on to form the band Coming Up Roses, Rachel played with the band Fruit Machine until 1999, and Debsey later collaborated with Saint Etienne and formed the band Birdie. | 1:38:00 (Pop-up)

The Alice Bag Band was featured in the 1981 music doc, The Decline of Western Civilization." -- "Bag is best known for being a member of the Bags, one of the first bands on the L.A. punk scene. The Bags were notable for having two female lead musicians (Patricia Morrison co-founded the group with her school friend, Bag) and for pioneering an aggressive sound and style which has been cited as an early influence on what would become the hardcore punk sound. The aggressive sound that the band had was later noted to have a Mexican/Chicano influence that Bag unintentionally brought along from her childhood" | 1:40:53 (Pop-up)

The Sha La Das | Sha La Da La La (Christmas Time) | Love In The Wind | Daptone | 2018 | The Sha La Das story begins with William Schalda, Sr., who hailed from Brooklyn, New York and grew up with a love of music. Schalda was a gifted singer and developed a passion for vocal harmonies, and in the early '60s, teenaged Schalda was a member of the Montereys, a popular local doo wop group. At the center of The Sha La Das are the four Schaldas: three talented brothers and the father who taught his boys group harmonies on the stoop of their Staten Island home growing up. The band features a number of the players that have helped define the Daptone Sound including members of The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Menahan Street Band. | 1:57:45 (Pop-up)

The Raveonettes | Snowstorm | Snowstorm Single | Beat Dies Records | 2020 | The Raveonettes are a Danish indie rock duo, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar, instruments and vocals, and Sharin Foo on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise.Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground. This is a perfect Blue Christmas song.... | 2:04:59 (Pop-up)

The Specials | Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think) | More Specials | Chrysalis Records | 1980 | ""Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)" is a popular song published in 1949, with music written by Carl Sigman and lyrics by Herb Magidson." R.I.P. Terry Hall. In this song he proclaimed "My name is Terry, and I'm going to enjoy myself first"... We truly hope so. | 2:25:30 (Pop-up)
The Specials | Enjoy Yourself (Reprise) | More Specials | Chrysalis Records | 1980 | The Specials' second album started w/ "Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)" and ends w/ "Enjoy Yourself (Reprise)", so, it seems doubly important. Once again, we will miss Terry Hall. | 2:29:09 (Pop-up) |

Haha, I remember this song was originally called "I Had Sex With E.T." It was really great ("his skin is green, his breath is alien-like/I had sex with ET, when we were on his bike," but they got some kind of cease-and-desist and had to change the lyrics.
