1994. I was already familiar with the name Irwin Chusid as a record producer. One Saturday morning, spinning the dial, stumbled across a track from the old Electric Company LP. It was Greasy Kid Stuff — FMU's beloved children's show from that era, with Hova & Belinda. Then, discovered that Irwin was hosting Incorrect Music. I never left.

I'd been peripherally aware of WFMU from my time in NYC and the occasional, serendipitous scan on the turnpike, but it was when I was working from home from Boston and a friend mentioned the Free Music Archive that they relied on for podcasts and its connection to WFMU that led me to be a full-time listener and later, from Michigan and now Wisconsin, a Swagger-for-Lifer.

I could pick up FMU in college in Yonkers back in the 90s. Was just one stop in the weird sounds we'd listen to, and I was never able to pay attention to specific shows or DJs (I may not have been fully sober, er, sometimes). We'd keep it programmed into the radio here, but reception used to be even worse than it is now. So we would periodically struggle to tune in for a few hours when the weather was right. I always like it when something that I didn't know was associated with WFMU personalities turns out to be. I liked Jim Flora's work for years before I realized that it was Irwin who was responsible for the great book compilations. I loved my One Kiss Leads to Another girl-groups hatbox collection for years and only just realized two years ago that Sheila B. did that. Similar moment recently, when I realized that the Monica record exec in the Wu Tang Saga show (which isn't something I adore, granted) is WFMU's Monica and was responsible for so many famous rap tunes from the 80s.

It was back in 1893 when i was in Nicola's house. He invited me and some other friends to test a new device he called radio. While demonstrating wireless transmissions he stumbled upon this crazy, dreadful sounding, high frequency phenomena on the 91,100 herz (91.1 Mhz). People hated it immediately, but I kind of loved it. So ever since I've been a fan of that radio frequency.

Origin Story: As a longtime fan of the unusual, I can't remember a time when I wasn't aware of WFMU's existence, it's always been stashed in my mind's garbage collection. During the lockdown, I happened upon Suzi Hotrod's show Rock n Roller Derby. I dug what she was throwing down and got hooked. I became a sustaining Swag for Life contributor and began listening everyday and participating on the chats with all the cool kids. After a couple years, I pitched an idea for a comedy music radio show, co-hosted with my daughter, DJ Kreightoven. Behold, now we're contributing a weekly show on Sheena's Jungle Room - tHe cHeEk iN tOnGuEs rAdIo sHow - Humor with a Great Sense of Music - Yay!!! Eternally grateful for WFMU, it's volunteer staff and our fellow chat buds.

I first became aware of WFMU in the 90s when I would get tapes of lives sets recorded off the radio passed on to me. Usually bands on Pat Duncans show.

Then in 2009 I realized you could listen to music on the internet. (Yes, I really didn't know you could do that). I decided to tune in right at the start of a pretty unhinged Billy Jam/Bryce transition followed by Bryce playing some great exotica and Diamanda Galas. I knew I'd found my place.

I bumped into WFMU in the late 80s, probably through Irwin's show, possibly through Citizen Kafka who was at WBAI at the time where I'd volunteer for the Free Music Store. I think through Kafka I'd go to these music soirees at Steinski's studio where Doug and Irwin et al would also be swapping record stories. My co-worker The Grape was a long time WFMU fan and we wired up a radio that could get it to an unused ethernet wire, and thence to speakers we could plug in.
I was an early Internet person (after years of BBSing) so I put up a version of excerpts from the LCD, including the schedule, on the gopher server running at echonyc.com. Eventually, I helped build up the WFMU website (and gopher), with silly features like the picture of the day, WFMU polls, the WFMU Catalog, the Marathon software, the Crackpot or Visionary of the day, Lives of the Great DJs, the online Blast Of Hot Air and On The Download, and lots of hand formatted playlists. Also show based webpages and the Flexi Museum. A lot of these things are still around if you look hard for them!

I grew up in Central NJ in the 80's & had access to awesome freeformish radio on WPRB, WTSR & WRSU. WFMU was this fabled holy grail station that was difficult to receive south of New Brusnswick. Fast forward to the early oughts, living in Greenpoint I enjoyed programs like Cherry Blossom Clinic & Incorrect Music, reception permitting. I even went to several record shows. Fast foward again to 2021, one year into working from home in Fort Worth I rediscovered WFMU while searching for interesting steaming online. I was infrequent listener to other shows until I got a 9-5 job where I'd listen during work, singling out songs I liked but not really digging into the shows. Shut Up, Weirdo hooked me since it meant the weekend started; while the rest of the office was cracking beers and chatting each other up, I'd just grab a tallboy and head back to my desk to listen to Frangry and Michelle. Just felt like the wavelength I was looking for in life. Next big step was the pandemic when I realized how much I relied on the station, started pledging, and putting up station stickers around town.

I started listening to WFMU around 2002/2003, when People Like Us mentioned WFMU to me and that she was about to start a show called DO OR DIY.

I've supported almost every year since, and the oldest thisrts I won are a few sizes too small now. Until I could not for financial reasons, from an account I want to merge into this one on KenzoDB.

I cannot wait to get back to stable and pledge pledge pledge!!!

LOVE YOU WFMU. My happy place!

I moved to NYC in 1976 and was a regular listener to WBLS which at the time had fresh programming. As the station became more popular, there was more advertising, notably the Crazy Eddie spots- Those ads were so repulsive that I'd try to find something else to listen to- twiddling the dial back and forth, as one might do back when, I found WFMU. Irwin was one of the DJs, Vanilla Bean, and Richard of Synthetic Pleasure, are a few that I listened to. Ken came along with his World Of Production Music. Nowadays there are many WFMU DJs that I listen to.
