"Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for composer Johnny Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written".[2] Altman attempted to write the lyric himself, but, upon finding it too difficult for his "45-year-old brain" to write something "stupid" enough,[3] he gave the task to his 15-year-old-son Michael, who reportedly wrote the lyrics in five minutes."

Then he throws a little blue box of family home recordings across the poorly constructed den and onto the floor; they crash into a plexiglass table full of cocaine and bills lain across an album by Charlie Rich and a double album ( on 8 track) by kristopherson. Finally, the Silver Fix and The Sliver Tongued Dust Devil appear together. And meanwhile that depressing war show that’s supposed to be funny plays in the background… the dribble and slice of it’s laugh track so depressing and dense … yes inescapable… that it creates its own event horizon… Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

I don’t mean to keep commenting so much but I have to say that your work tonight is absolutely mesmerizing to me. The lyrics to this song have always disturbed me to my core and not just because of the self harm content ( and the half-assed
logic the song seems to put forth) but because of the haphazard way they were tossed against the wall that was popular culture in the 70s.
