Cut into red ribbons and
Longing to be pasted
Along the seams back
Whole, I prefer to go un-
Sliced in the loopy light
Could it be that once
Lacerated twice freaked
An animal has to think
While it nurses its wounds
Sutures glistening in hard dark blood
Cats can be playful but
Later it falls upon me
Alone to reattach all the
Wires that had this boy
Standing upright, wishing I was real
Cast me back toward the
Long sick bed, prognosis:
Ailing, your sharp
Weapons have rendered me a
Savage reminder not to tussle with thee, kitteeeee

I just take off the tips with a trimmer I bought at the dollar store,.
He rolls over on his back & I just trim away & then brush him.
Little Squirt (black cat pictured at left) I have not yet attempted a nail trim.
As for brushing, he's not into it he just wants to play with the brush.
There are horizontal scratchers & vertical scratchers.
Squeezle is a horizontal scratcher & uses an outdoor rug I have at my entrance to scratch.
Squirt is a vertical scratcher & uses a kitchen chair leg. It's fine, they are old.
One thing about nail trimming.
If a cat doesn't scratch enough on their own & you just remove the tips, the nail sheath gets very thick a can be a problem, particularly when it comes to the dewclaw (up on the leg) as it can grow back into the leg.
I think different "breeds" scratch more or less than others.
My tuxedos (I've had two) don't really scratch much at all and have had the thick sheath issues.
The black cat & my Siamese that I used to have are always scratching on something so I find their nail sheaths on the floor when sweeping.

The only use for the dewclaw is for climbing trees & such which neither cat does indoors, so it's easy to forget about trimming them.
I had to remove an ingrown from my late Kitty Boy Floyd's leg once. Not pleasant. That's when I used the leather gloves I mentioned. He was not happy but we got it done.
