"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

"Daigle's Grocery, Algiers Point, New Orleans, Louisiana
The store hours sign outside this little neighborhood grocery represents one of those "only in New Orleans" kinda things. My favorite hours-of-operation sign EVER."

Up on the roof doing some yoga, listening on a portable Bose speaker. And I’m hearing these little percussive taps that seem like some syncopated stuff going on over the intro. But then as it shifted while getting louder the spell was broken and realized it was the construction going on on the next block over behind.
Started thinking JA had taken to tapping out some rhythms over the classic dark Don Henley-esque groove…

"Expired is one thing, I don't mind it. This place, however, has too many items that expired 4-5 years ago. Items were dirty - they live up to their name, many smelled musty, some sauces had grown chunks, and some items had mold. This Is by far the worst salvage grocery we've been in"

That fire was controlled by the sprinkler system, but it also raised suspicion as it does anytime there are multiple fires in multiple buildings on the same property.
“We’re probably not looking at accidental fires,” Hunley said.

Both because of the purposeful collapse of newspapers with their deep roster of costly reporters, and the social media-induced clickbait headlines that serve as stories “having read” by terminal scrollers who probably whizz by tens of thousands of pieces of discreet information everyday.
Which of course jettisons any hope for a connection to empathy.

Although it seems so much of reportage these days (or maybe more specifically in a corporate commercial capacity) intentionally avoids bringing in any human element. Cold facts and stats. Philip Roth had a great quote about not being able to glean much of the real drama in a baseball game from just reading the box score.
A building burned, likely from arson. Do we know anything about the owner, or the town’s relationship to the place, etc? Was his uninsured wife diagnosed with cancer and unable to play the bills? Was he hopelessly depressed about relations with old friends, the political situation, a gambling bet he couldn’t pay off, an unscrupulous vendor who kept cheating him, etc?
Burning a building down takes a lot of thought, planning, coordination not to get caught. What drove him finally to come to a moment in which he decided, “yes, I’m going to light the match”?
I don’t know. Just the fact that it burned tells the reader nothing really.
And I think it’s on purpose that “the news” accustoms us to not thinking deeper and more broadly about anything anymore.
