Are the "Goth Comps" you mention crowdsourced? The way you describe them, there are 100+ comps, each numbered, and have no production info but an eclectic range of well-known and lesser-known Goth tracks. It might just be fans putting these together and passing them around.

In the late '80s? That would be after the "Showa Pop" era, probably before the J-Pop as we know it, but do you think there is a line between late 80s and 2000s J-Pop? How about "City Pop"? I got into those a couple years ago from YT playlists - like their take on Yacht Rock/Smooth Jazz in the 70s/80s.

Broccoli raab is an interesting Italian side in the Philly/NJ region. I was in Philly last year and tried local specialties, including the "PBR" sandwich (Pork - Provolone - Broccoli Raab). It seems like some retailers took the longbox format and some didn't for some reason. I remember reading that it was a concession to record store retailers who both thought CDs by themselves were too easy to steal and also so they could be more easily integrated into existing bins made for 12" records.

I remember when CDs first hit stores they would just have them locked in a glass case like they were jewelry or something. I think the first CD I ever bought was that Misfits CD comp because it was created just for the CD format. I didn't even have a player yet.

I remember reading somewhere that retailers were mad that this upstart format was being forced on them by the industry and they would have to rebuild their retail spaces to fit it. Not sure if true as some of the factoids about CD creation have an aspect of urban legend to them. Like the one about CDs being the length they are because it fit Philips - who codeveloped the format - CEO's favorite symphony.

There was another, possibly spurious, factoid about CDs where the reason they were so expensive initially was that in production CDs had this abysmal reject rate until they perfected the process. They just never dropped the prices as it didn't seem to deter consumers even though CDs were twice was a cassette - then the ruling format - was.
