"Billion Oyster Project is a New York City-based nonprofit organization with the goal of engaging one million people in the effort to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. Because oysters are filter feeders, they serve as a natural water filter, with a number of beneficial effects for the ecosystem: www.billionoysterproject.org
the clean water act has done a lot to repair some of the damage that had been done. the key is to keep the wrong people from destroying the protections already in place and the right people to keep creating more protections

it’s just western industrial culture

I think religious extremism and the concept of Manifest Destiny are to blame
yeah! like instead of being stuck with some dipshit like Eric Adams

Just wanna say, humans are animals that have and can be part of the ecosystems of the world. The places today with the most biodiversity are stewarded by indigenous peoples who work with the land. The idea that humans are separate from nature is called western esotercism, and it's a really counter historical and destructive idea
Unfortunately, most of the indigenous people were eliminated by the ancestors of the people who ate all the oysters.

Agree with guy about changing voting system, HOwEVER, any system that elects only self-promoters is doomed. We should be electing people who are NOT self appointed
The problem is people don't vote. It's easy to put down the system but if only half the people vote no system is gonna get us a truly representative goverment

Orangutans are solitary animals as adults.

Admire My Chives:
Absolutely. The Abrahamic origin myth claims that all creation was made for humans.

I adore the band O’rang and I usta appreciate Tang as a kid … both have Orange 🍊 perceptive qualities. And have always triggered thinking of Orangutans 🦧 !

“Human race against a vastly more powerful, unforgiving natural world” goes back way, way before “Abrahamic” culture
Jill Lepore wrote a sobering overview of humans deforestation of the world in a recent issue of the New Yorker. Without getting high and mighty, she breaks it down to the self interest of ALL primates since they first fell out of trees and started gathering branches to build huts. Take it from there and weep.
You made some salient point Micah, but then you've got a radio station at your disposal. We should all be so lucky.
Thanks Fox.

I’d like to hear the basis of this story. Orangutans generally don’t forage in “troops” (the value of the story as a metaphoric fable notwithstanding)
