Rembrandt and Mallard don't interact much on the show. I wonder if that line about not enjoying the same things as Rembrandt was a pointed reference to Rembrandt's... "orientation"?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Austin Rich:

There are only two more episodes of Candy Matson, on our "short run" program this Spring / Summer. Next week, we'll air the series finale of Candy Matson, where Candy's life changes dramatically. Then, the week after, we'll hear the pilot episode, from when they tried to re-launch the show, a few years later. (That time, with pre-recorded music cues and fully transcribed performances, rather than entirely live actors and music, like with the rest of the episodes.)

This particular episode of Candy Matson aired a week before Christmas. Interestingly, they did a Dickens spoof (according to broadcast records) on Christmas Day, and Candy takes a New Year's Vacation on Jan 1st this year. It's a bummer we don't have those episodes.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm

While it doesn't seem to happen as much these days - except intentionally - I recall, in the 80's, that holiday episodes of syndicated shows would just air in order, even if they were not seasonal on the date the re-run aired. (Leading to accidental "Christmas in July" situations.) I think people started to notice more in the 90's, and I think by the 2000's, you didn't see that kind of thing happening anymore.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

There are an astonishing number of X-Minus One (and Dimension X) stories that have a crime, criminal, or gangster aspect to them. (More if you include detective stories, etc.) Certainly, most authors writing Sci-Fi and other pulp fiction at the time were also writing detective stories, gangster stories, and other pulp type stuff.

Junior is presented just like a modern chatbot AI: a learning system that is fairly naive and mostly childlike in many behavior. It's up to the person who programs it - and fills the AI with that person's ideas and perspective - to make the AI "good" or "bad."

Like a lot of people who want to weaponize AI Chatbots and other kinds of modern digital tools - Duke is pretty shortsighted as to what the implications of doing this might be. I mean, what could go wrong, teaching your robot how to do evil? I mean, where could the robot learn competing ideas from...?

Like a lot of people, Charlie seems to be unnerved by Junior, only because he's a robot. It isn't just before Junior kills Charlie that Charlies discovers Junior is tapeable of murder. Before that, Charlie was merely nervous that junior was a robot... not at all aware of how he was specifically programmed.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Austin Rich:

People - like Charlie - seem to be nervous of AI tech now, without knowing anything about how they are specifically programmed. Certainly, AI tech will only be as good / evil as they programmer. But to fear the tech before we know anything about it... very irrational.

Junior seems to have picked up the human interest in a partner, something that people don't seem to be worried about happening to our AIs, these days. Most concerns are only on how evil they could become. The notion they could embody our other anxieties is rarely considered, now. Junior wants to have a girlfriend... bad!
