Merrily We Roll Along is a mish-mash of high energy lunacy, reverence, and irreverence for forgotten pop stars, love for Saturday morning cartoons, and exploration of the side of Bandcamp where I seem to be the only one purchasing. Bringing to you the odd and the upbeat from a growing collection of pre-rock novelties, classic and neo-Vaudeville, jug bands, polka, klezmer, and more at the convenient hour of 8-9 AM EST, Merrily We Roll Along starts the day off with a little light-hearted musical tomfoolery cut with an occasional comedy sketch. It's organic, free-range, cheese with the occasional onion thrown in.

The Brothers Nazaroff  Maidlach Vie Blumen (Girls Are Like Flowers)   Favoriting 2015  "International klezmer supergroup the Brothers Nazaroff pays joyous tribute to legendary outsider Yiddish troubadour Nathan “Prince” Nazaroff, recorder of the mysterious 1954 Folkways LP Jewish Freilach Songs. Uniting as his spiritual heirs, the Brothers Nazaroff (Daniel Kahn, Psoy Korolenko, Michael Alpert, Jake Shulman-Ment, Bob Cohen, and Hampus Melin) celebrate the discordant, obscure, jubilant, ecstatic legacy of their Happy Prince."

Daniel Kahn & Psoy Korolenko  Rokhele   Favoriting 2020  "Satirical early Soviet song of tsarist repression and revolutionary assimilation of Jews of the Pale." The Pale of Settlement was the area of Tsarist Russia (mostly Poland) in which Jews were permited.

Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird  Khurbn Katrina   Favoriting 2009  A Yiddish song written for hurricane Katrina. A bit downbeat for this show but a companion to the next song.

Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird  The Destruction of New Orleans   Favoriting 2009  The same song as the previous but rearranged as New Orleans influenced jazz/swing.

Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird  Good Old Bad Old Days   Favoriting 2012  From the 2012 album, Bad Old Songs, some of Daniel Kahn's work in this period is much too gloomy for this show but the irony and upbeat tempo of this song allow it's inclusion.

Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird  Denn Woven Lebt Der Mensch?   Favoriting 2010  Song from Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera" given a poetic adaptation. Same musical as "Mack the Knife".

The Brothers Nazaroff  Der Koptzen (The Poor Man)   Favoriting 2015  The only song on this album given no translation to the lyrics. The lyrics are described as too filthy to transcribe.
Favoriting

Dan Kahn  The Pegboard Blues   Favoriting 2004  Daniel Kahn's first album was not klezmer and I only discovered last night. You can see some of the campy theatre humor that evolves in the lighter-hearted songs on future releases.
