This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Okay.
...When I lived in SantaBarbara - I worked a CD Store (to place the era...) - & the Assistant Manager turned out to be a really kewl guy devoted to StraightAhead Jazzes - became sort of a West Coast surrogate BigBro - whose coattails I road to Jazz knowledge & things.
So ...got set up a weekly Jazz thing @ a local hotel
...with a couple of local SB guys as the HouseBand of it / Rhythm Section PickUp Band as necessary...
So - they got EddieHarris
...& - @ one point - Eddie gestured for the PickUp guys to just Sit Out
...& ...just clacking the keys on his Sax - not even 'playing' it in the normal Sax sense
...he *shamed* these local guys.
I'll never forget this.
Not long after, he passed away...

Supposedly Freud said he didn't see the subconscious in Dali's work, but the conscious. Point taken...
The technique & imagination tho ...maybe early on more 'organic' & spontaneous ? & sometimes more Abstract than we tend to think ? ...& even later when Dali was 'doing Dali' - he prefigures PopArt, of course... the Technique, obviously ...& pretty committed to his trip ...whatever it was...
[In thick Dali accent :]

I'm unaware of Dali personality issues, except that he was a shameless self-promoter. I was also referring to the cottage industry of pirated material that rode the coattails of his celebrity. For instance, I have a "limited edition" (isn't every edition limited?) of a set of playing cards he designed, a gift in the '70s from a friend. It's in a nifty wooden box with a seal and a signature. Authentic? I have no idea.

I'll just note that immediately after you criticize Falangism you welcome Franco. Have you no shame?

I don't regard political ideological sympathies as a function of personality. To me personality issues are, for instance, hubris, demagoguery, plain old rudeness, self-importance. I'm of the opinion that people with horrible ideological commitments aren't necessarily horrible people.

Pretty short line from demagoguery to Fascist sympathies - is it not ?
There have been a lot of Creatives & Intellectuals who had a powerful interest in Mythology, Symbolism & the Unconscious who saw some kind of simpatico with the Rise of Fascism. Jung for instance could hardly keep from saying I Told You So ...but the wise guys puled back quick when they saw what such regimes really meant for esotericists such as themselves ...or not. Yeah that matters. Dali was also Catholic ...yerknow - all that...
