View John Allen's profile |
"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Wait. Something is different. Bob James, I know I saw him. He was in the background of that video. Just for a second. That was definitely him.
There he is again. He's there, right next to Missy Elliot, holding the champagne bottle, there in the back of the Bentley!
And that's him, the A&R guy in that Pharcyde video. That's him!
No way! Outkast made a video for "SpottieOttieDopaliscious?" Is that him, there in the cut? Just then, Andre calls out: "Damn, damn, damn, James."
I fucking knew it.

Just walked 2miles round trip in this insane monsoon. Quite lovely though, even though the umbrella did little to keep my pants from becoming soaked. No Passar! along the Astoria Pk waterfront walkway.

The Clash, and DeNiro… said what? Made me think of the lyrics to London Calling. About the coming Ice Age and sun zooming in and engines stop running and the wheat growing thin, etc.

For me, it’s consumer culture, people way too glued to tv’s and devices. To such an extent that too many have stored in their brains corporate jingles, celebrity commercials and the like. Many more people can recite trivial tidbits about nonsense, rather than the really moving and stirring stories that too few are taught or learn about those who have sacrificed to make this hellhole a little better of a place. Instead of, you know, realizing that we’re all in this thing together and that the least of us still deserve basic access to being able to live a dignified life.
Pop culture is part and parcel of the kind of alienation that is bred because we can’t talk honestly and openly with one another about anything, except for talking about the weather and what we bought on sale at Amazon, and of course, which celebrity said what.
Popular culture in this country is completely commodified, and boosted by wealthy corporate conglomerates who use it to distract the 99% from how we’ve been F-ed in way too many ways into being forced into a system of living precarious lives just one emergency removed from destitution.
Almost all of what is “popular” is manufactured.
