Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from January 26, 2024 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I think Bob Hope got zillions of alternate lyrics written for it as he sang it for, I dunno, 50 years?
Avatar 🎭 7:12pm

↳ Webhamster Henry @7:10
Yes, the youngsters might not know that it became Hope's theme song, and he sang at least a scrap of it at the end of every TV special (and stage show?) that I ever saw. (The were at least annual events for years.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
doctorjazz:

Hope sang it on his TV shows, and he also did at his shows he did for the troops, which were sometimes on TV.

↳ Song: "On The Street Where You Live" by "John Gary"
Hmmm, John Gary did not become popular in spite of Gordon Jenkins arrangements... Perhaps a bit too smooth even for 1965?

Avatar 🎭 7:59pm
Listener Gregory:

I think Stratas is using her "opera voice" to sing Broadway and pop songs. More recent divas, like Dawn Upshaw, use a vocal tone that is more suited to Broadway repertoire, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.

Could it be working on some level if you thought it was Madeline Kahn, at first?

Interesting that this is considered Chevalier’s signature song. I think the only song of his I know is “Thank heaven for little girls.” But that may just be his US film fame.

↳ Song: "Some Enchanted Evening" by "Ray Charles"
I love, love, love this Ray Charles version. However, this sounds like a recording of the album playing on a record player. The original is much higher fidelity. Don't miss it, people!

Cool Version, but sonically not so great (at least hear in Chez Doctorjazz). Sounds "squished", compressed.
