My crew in Kalamazoo was pretty tight with Ann Arbor folks through the 90s. We’d go to Ann Arbor for shows. The Ann Arbor crew would come to Kalamazoo and were kind of in awe of our lifestyle - like jumping fences to go swimming in peoples pools and sitting around a fire in the woods drinking beer - haha!
  10:14pm

Could be. Dart baited the cops so much that day from the stage. Was very worked up. Was still on stage after the rest of the band left and pulled what looked like a string of puke out of his throat.

Some day I will have to get back—I left at an age that all I really remember are Marble School, Mickey Mouse Hill, and the weird animal kid play pavilion at the Meijer’s Thrifty Acres—last time I visited MI, decided to fly through Kalamazoo, rather than Lansing, so I could stop by Bell’s on the way back to the airport (this was well before Bell’s got broader distribution & one could get better beer just about everywhere)

House shows primarily. There was a punk house near the football stadium, then a house on Huron with what seemed liked 78 trashed bicycles in the back yard. Blind Pig occaisionallly and Rick’s a few times.

I wasn't connected with the house show scene. Everything at Blind Pig and Rick's seemed to be bad white-guy blues when I was there. Had to go to Detroit for good shows, which was really annoying when one wanted to drink. Fortunately, I had a 1983 Buick Le Sabre Limited, so I blended well.

Yeah, that was nuts that there was a play areas in the middle of Meijers stores that parents would just plunk their kids down there and go shopping!

At one point Bells really was the best thing going. I think it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Bells sought out national distribution.

Speaking of Texas punk, there’s a cornucopia of Texas punk reissues coming out soon. Kill From the Heart this month, Touch and Go’s reissuing the 3 Big Boys LPs and Matadors putting out PCPPEP, Annother Man’s Sac and Locust Abotion Technician.

I'm sure there are some other early punk band VU covers I heard before finding my way to the originals...The Modern Lovers and Stooges I picked up on pretty young, but the velvets took a little longer.

I lost all my records, most of my tapes, some CDs, and all my D&D-ish gaming stuff when my dad died when I was twenty-one. The good news is that somehow my dice stayed with me. I guess I prioritized the portable. Still have the original Crown Royal pouch I stole from my sister's secret liquor stash when I was like eight.

Same with me.

And my friends' high school band also played Sweet Jane. I probably heard all three version around the same time, in the mid-/late-seventies. I didn't hear the VU version until the eighties.
