With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

July 21, 2024: Jelena Ana Milcetic and Conrad Yeatis Clark
A Sunday birthday twin-bill featuring 95-year old singer Helen Merrill from New York, happily still in our mortal midst, a fearless explorer of many musics - and from the Pittsburgh region hard-bop pianist Sonny Clark, sadly whipped off HIS mortal coil at 31. But what a sweet legacy. This show is especially recommended for people who like people named Sonny... and/or Clark ... have a ball countin' 'em up on the playlist!

' Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic; July 21, 1929) is an American jazz vocalist. Her first album, the eponymous 1954 recording Helen Merrill (with Clifford Brown on EmArcy), was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After an active 1950s and 1960s, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States. In the 1980s and 1990s, she was recorded by EmArcy, JVC and Verve, and her performances in America revived her profile. Known for her emotional, sensual vocal performances, she continues to perform today, her career now in its sixth decade of concerts and recordings '...

Learned to love Clifford Brown (whose son, Cliff, Jr., is a DJ in these parts) via his EmArcy "And Strings" album. From there I picked up the EmArcy Brown box, which includes the record with Merrill. What a collection!

Though woefully uninformed, I've always respected and acknowledged the work of Sonny Clark, so thanks for the fine selection of his recordings.
I "thought" I was informed enough on Helen Merrill to go with a, "yeah cute but whatever" assessment of her work. Well, again woefully uninformed and also totally wrong of me. More listening adventures await.
Thank you!
Still waiting on a successful formulation and distribution of Glenn Passaic paletas o helados. ¡gracias!
