Bob, I can’t seem to figure out how to do that reply thing on my iPhone. That midnight jam (summer β€˜76, I believe) was the only time I saw Rahsaan. The list of musicians who played that night was astounding. I think part of the proceeds went for Rahsaan’s medical needs, and I remember him coming out and playing solo.

Here’s The NY Times review. It doesn’t do it justice

↳ Song: "Hey Grandma" by "Moby Grape"
Years ago I had a mechanic who was born and raised in San Francisco. One day he came over to my house while I was sorting records. He picked up the first Moby Grape album off the living room floor and said "When I was in the sixth grade, a friend of mine lived upstairs from an apartment where Moby Grape would practice. We would come home from school to watch cartoons and they would be going at it. We would drink chocolate milk and stare at the floor as the music was booming below us."

My mechanic was exactly the same age as me, so he would have been in the sixth grade in 1966/67, right when Moby Grape was taking off.

Just thinking about it made my head spin.

One afternoon I walked over to Jacks Record Cellar in The Lower Haight. This young guy comes into the store in a highly agitated state, and wants to know if they have the first Moby Grape album. Wade, the owner goes into the back and comes back with a copy, then casually starts telling us about when he use to see them at The Ark in Sausalito. At this point I'm paying attention. Wade is recounting this memory like he went to the 7-11 to get a cup of coffee.
