I tended to write back everyone, at least with a form letter and personal note, telling the artist it didn’t fit for us, and tried to be encouraging. Some I just designed a different one for, where it was just so bad I just asked them to make sure that they were certain music was indeed their calling in life.
Then…there were a couple of way-out there experiences. The Alternative Rockets tape was one. (Pronounced Alter-Native, as in Native American). The person doing these did these live to a keyboard with 2 or 3 presets (you’ll hear a few songs that are exactly the same with lyric changes and perhaps a modulation somewhere in there) to a cassette recorder.
Not only that, but I believe they were knocked out as “live performances” for everyone he sent them to-you hear ruffling of papers (the lyric sheets) and starting the keyboard part in addition to the end of side one where he mentions the label he’s sending this to (in this case, all addressed to me but the tape was intended for Staple Gun records, best known for the Surprise Your Pig REM tribute. (I called them, they got mine….we were both stunned.)
So, when this packet of crayon drawings of the “band” (there is no band) and the written out lyric sheets, and the written out section where he talks about being from London, England (though it came from PA) and you can “tell by his accent and the way I am talking” among other things…it caught my attention.
My kids, very young at the time, loved this and couldn’t get enough of it. It was pointed out to me that some of these lyrics were also a copy of Green Day lyrics, which I never did dive much into but not surprising.
In the video, you get the full tape, all the stops and starts, the contents of the envelope, etc. There was a truckload of tape hiss and background noise and I’ve dialed that back a bit at the expense of overall volume, which was a battle but in the end made it a bit easier on the ears.
Back in 1995, this was pretty funny and no, I didn’t send back a letter despite the S.A.S.E because part of me was kind of afraid to. I look back now as a much older person and realize of course this is a bit tricky because there’s certainly a mental illness factor at play (and the other, much more scary demo I’ll get up soon really does) and I have that bit of an internal debate like I did with Wesley Willis. It’s art, it’s funny, but? Still, always wanted to share this to a wider audience.
I would imagine the vast majority of these weren’t even opened, or listened to. I’ve never known his name and think about how things wound up with him.

I don't think anyone will ever ask me to share what I'm listening at work ever again (first and only was Kenny G) but this show would be a great way to end that for a while (which is why I might be working late, that damn hour+ commute requires planning)

I'll probably miss most of the show from now on, but it's on my (unmanageable) archive list.
Take care, I hope that September doctor appointment will help
