Lately I have been using my Digitakt II as my main scratch pad. I feed that into REAPER (wonderful DAW), and work it into something. If I don't want to use REAPER, I'll play with my RC-505 looper.
I sample all sorts of things into the Digitakt: synths, other samplers, guitars, drums, odds and ends around the house, voice samples from all over the Internet, field recordings, etc.

Hey DjLorraine!

I NEED an rc-505, especially after seeing Julianna Barwick use one so well this weekend

And yes, the Digitakt is amazing. I have never owned a piece of Elektron gear before and, while people complain about the workflow, I enjoy it. I think most of it makes a lot of sense.
I have a Hydrasynth desktop edition that I really like. Which one did you get? I haven't had a lot of time to play around with in-depth sound design, but I am quite impressed with all of the options. I am kind of disappointed I didn't get the 49-key version.
I highly recommend the RC-505. I had an RC-50 and retired that one to get the extra tracks. I have experienced a few crash bugs here and there, but I just learned to save often!
I used to stay off the computer when making music, but I wanted to have a bit more control, so I dove into REAPER again after using it on and off since it came out. I am a big fan of Justin Frankel. Unsung hero of the early Internet age.

I run Linux, so I have been impressed since WINE worked well and now that they have an official Linux version, it's even better.

I enjoy the REAPER community and scripting aspect that you can use to expand its capabilities. I have only installed scripts, but look forward to diving in and writing some of my own.
And it's lightweight. 12 megs or so for the full Linux download. Similarly small on OSX and Windows. It's uncrippled shareware, like the original Winamp, so you can evaluate without barriers.
zachary:
I mean, obviously, you love sound. It's in your name. Ha! ;-)
Dan 2:
I have the hydrasynth explorer -- I would love the deluxe but I needed to save the money and the space. It's so good for creating noise patches, and I use it in my live setup.
I'll have to look into Reaper! I oddly love trying out DAWs.

Cool. I wanted the extra displays, but the smaller footprint, which is why I went with the Desktop version. But now, at times, I wish I had the polyphonic aftertouch keys in the 49-key version. The Deluxe would have been too big!
And yes, the Hydrasynth can make all sorts of sounds. For me, it's a lot of fun to record an evolving patch and then splice it up with the Grid machine on the Digitakt II.
Yes. Check out REAPER. Lots of great tutorials on YouTube, too. And make sure you checkout the script community. Lots of interesting ideas.

That's great. Do any of the shows get posted? I knew a local guy who recorded a lot of the live music in town, asked permission, and had a private bootleg collection. Lots of amazing music.

Another way would be to put an LFO on the sample start time to get a similar effect.

When they are that young, they still require you for a lot of the minute to minute, hour to hour, activity. Most beautiful way to disrupt your life, I say.
Nice find! I'm sure that's a lot of work, but you'll love it. And she will, too. ;-) We are grateful to have a couple of pocket parks nearby.
