Before I knew the folk origins of this song the line about eating up all of the corn seemed so random. I was picturing Del Monte canned corn.

Cricket, has WFMU gotten a copy of Pekko Käppi's Finnish Folk Songs Vol. 1? In contrast to his rock work, it's just him, his voice and a jouhikko recorded in a living room, and has some amazing traditional Finnish songs.

There are some numbers for which I'm always making the mental comparison with the one I like best, and there are others where I don't. This one I do.

Because I coached children's football games, I would hear the Star Spangled Banner a lot -- always the 4th stanza. Various recordings, sometimes someone singing live to recorded accompaniment or no accompaniment. The live singers always ham it up, especially if a capella, and therefore stink. There are some things that you just can't improve, only ruin.

i've spent far too much time wondering whether the sheriff's full name is supposed to be "John Stone," or if his last name is simply "Johnstone"

It's great. Pekko is my neighbor, so I could ask him if a download or CD is available. Sending vinyl is just too expensive.
In case you're interested, he and I did a set of Finnish and American folk music as banjo/cello duets last year on the Finnish Sauna Day celebration at Rajaportti Sauna, and you can see it here: www.youtube.com...

By contrast, "To Anacreon in Heaven" I've heard only once or so, so it has nothing to live up to.

Thinking of all of you in or with connections to western NC. I grew up in Greenville SC, when Asheville was a small city that had the third TV channel we could get, and it was fascinating to see how if developed. I had planned to go there a couple of days during my upcoming visit, but that is clearly out - unless there is some kind of work I can do to help

I'm holding up pretty well. The devastation along the rivers here is still hard to comprehend, and the lac k of running water in most of the city is tough. But my part of town fared much better than some.

I don't know which Asheville groups are looking for volunteers right now, the only one I recall seeing is in Marshall just north of us, their downtown was wiped out but they seem to have a strong and organized community volunteer network.
