".... on 31 March 1949, RCA released the first commercial seven-inch single, spinning at 45rpm. Eddy Arnold's Texarkana Baby / Bouquet of Roses was on bright green vinyl, soon followed by Arthur Crudup's That's All Right / Crudup After Hours on cerise vinyl – both rock'n'roll primers. The two formats, singles and four-track EPs, were colour-coded - green vinyl for country and polka, red for classical, yellow for children's, blue for international, cerise for rhythm'n'blues...."

Poem: "I Love You Sweatheart," by Thomas Lux from New and Selected Poems: 1975-1995 (Houghton Mifflin Co.).
I Love You Sweatheart
A man risked his life to write the words.
A man hung upside down (an idiot friend
holding his legs?) with spray paint
to write the words on a girder fifty feet above
a highway. And his beloved,
the next morning driving to work…?
His words are not (meant to be) so unique.
Does she recognize his handwriting?
Did he hint to her at her doorstep the night before
of "something special, darling, tomorrow"?
And did he call her at work
expecting her to faint with delight
at his celebration of her, his passion, his risk?
She will know I love her now,
the world will know my love for her!
A man risked his life to write the words.
Love is like this at the bone, we hope, love
is like this, Sweetheart, all sore and dumb
and dangerous, ignited, blessed - always,
regardless, no exceptions,
always in blazing matters like these: blessed.

hello, Michele! Feelers! and Lenny!
i have been *trying* to listen, just too many stupid distractions 😩 -- thank goodness for the WFMU archives!
just signing in now, so i do not know if you or anyone else has mentioned your column in "Rock Scene" magazine, "Ask Doc Rock"? waaay before inter-webby times, you answered all our questions 😺😺
in the Autumn of 1977, i was in my first year at Douglass College/Rutgers -- by then you had started your "Doc Rock's Correspondence Corner" (you were talking about how you connected with other Science Fiction fans years ago -- pen pals!) -- i met the "ex" through your column (i was not looking for a boyfriend -- but at the time Rutgers was Bruce Springsteen and Disco overkill! -- i was just looking for others who would later be called "punks"!) -- iirc, our first date was The Tubes at The Palladium and The Cramps at CBGB -- Spring of 1978?
but, my very first concert was Patti at Princeton University, when i was still in high school -- the "early" show, with another "rock and roll pen pal" (through The Aquarian, iirc)
do you remember Half Thoughts in New Brunswick? i still have the Rutgers yearbook i scored there -- pre-coed days, but with your graduation photo featuring your scandalously "long" hair!
