Today: Christopher Brown, author, “A Natural History of Empty Lots”

In a quest to “make life feel a little more real,” tech lawyer Chris Brown started exploring the wilderness outside his house on the edge of Austin, Texas. Chris’s reflections on how we impact on the natural world, and how we can improve, are collected in his beautifully written new book “A Natural History of Empty Lots: Field Notes from Urban Edgelands, Back Alleys, and Other Wild Places.”

aside, but kinda related, i saw a one man play on saturday, at the Pubic (haha) Theater nyc. it was brilliant. info -

At the end of 2019, in the English countryside, Australian playwright David Finnigan began writing a play about the six turning points that have brought us to this moment in time—our ecosystems transformed, our planet on the brink of unthinkable climate disaster. But then Finnigan's hometown of Canberra was hit by bushfires. As an area the size of England burned and one billion animals perished, he started to receive texts from loved ones racing to evacuate amid the devastation. In a performance that interweaves 75,000 years of humanity with the incredibly personal account of his best friend’s escape, Finnigan calls on scientific research, phone footage, and a very personal story to illuminate the transforming planet and how we’ve arrived here.  An extraordinary ride through human history, DEEP HISTORY is shot through with humor and glowing with hope.

We have canyons in San Diego. Sometimes people try to dump things in the canyons. About a month ago, on a walk in our neighborhood, I stumbled upon some guys unloading something from a pickup truck.

On my return trip home I found a central air conditioning unit on the sidewalk. Apparently the guys I saw a few minutes earlier unloaded it onto the sidewalk, because they couldn't fit it through the break in the fence which lead to a canyon.

TX buys jobs from CA enterprises with free real estate and discounted taxes. These are drop kicked jobs in expiring programs that used to go to Mexico and Philippines. TX rigs the numbers and claims the jobs are created by Texans. They are call center, project or manufacturing, not innovation. They are vulnerable jobs to the economy.
