For me, Andy was one of the very few who could nail the classic 1964-66 Brian Wilson production sound, probably as good as anyone who tries. Listen to "Best Day Ever" from the Sponge Bob soundtrack, and it's Wilson circa 1965, minus the voices of course

Correct answer is the Ramones

Nothing against the band, but that may be the first time "Velvet Revolver" was heard as the answer to a question.

I worked on a book that never quite happened called How the Beatles Ruined Everything, in which the author -- a member of a respected indie band turned rock critic -- posits that Kraftwerk is the most influential band ever.

The Beatles were so good that I don't think anybody was actually able to be influenced by them. I'd lean towards the Kinks or Kraftwerk.

The thing is, he makes a good point about the influence of Kraftwerk supplanting the four-man band setup that the Beatles became the model for.

I buy that. Kraftwek drove a lot of democratization in music. Whereas the Beatles were so good at the 2 guitars / bass / drums / harmonized vocals paradigm that it's kind of like, "Well, I can't do that."

Completely revolutionary concept. They connect to so many types of music that are still hugely popular. Pop music these days, it seems to me, is far more indebted to Kraftwerk than to the Beatles.
