Also, I'm so glad I gave up on my teen "punk" opposition to pop music like this. My life is much more fun. I got lucky in my 20s to have friends who got me to embrace things I really did actually love when I was younger. I have to wonder if I'd have written some cool pop songs when I was younger and more prolific (I wasn't actually all that prolific).

When Dylan and the Beatles met in '64, Dylan brought Al Aronowitz with him and they rolled joints and smoked together. I heard that too. I think a lot of the Beatles' true story from Hamburg and even Liverpool was very carefully scrubbed and kept from the official narrative especially in the early days of 64-65 in order to preserve their image. I'm sure they toked up both in Liverpool and in Hamburg, in fact didn't Harrison even call joints "jazz cigarettes" in a few interviews? If they hung in art school and beatnik circles in the early 60's, they would have toked up

Those who have access to those with the fame are the ones who are often truly messed up...the access is the drug and the addiction and when that access disappears or dwindles, they're lost and start acting out in some weird ways. Look no further than the Bob Crane story and any non-famous person who gets that fringe taste of being in the bubble and what they do when it ends.
