I caught the end of Ryley Walker's set at the Empty Bottle last night. I would have hit you up but it was a spur of the moment decision to go, I had people over for dinner and after the party ended I couldn't sleep and I remembered about Ryley's gig. The band sounded great, Quin Kirchner on drums, Andrew Young on bass and Bill Mackay on 2nd guitar. Hometown heroes.

In the '70s, the only way you could listen to music from the '20s was on 78 records, which were already collector's items at the time. Now any schmoe can listen to music from any time with digital technology.

The key is probably in the word 'we'. Who are 'we'? My bias is that music from that period speaks to me, from Revolver to the 90s, but before that is remote and after that seems to have abandoned skill....but someone much younger probably doesn't see it that way, and in fact might not find popular music culture of any sort even relevant to anything. Business management and self-love seems more central.

Robert Clary (who played Lebeau on Hogan's Heroes) came to our middle school to share his experiences as a Holocaust Survivor. (Im not making this up). Not only did he share with us his horrfying experiences in a concentration camp, but he shared his grim sense of irony that HE was cast in a show about a WWII POW camp. He was a nice man.

It was powerful stuff, especially for 12 year olds like us at the time. Even more painful was seeing an elderly teacher outside the auditorium sobbing. Turned out she was a little girl growing up in Germany who lived outside a concentration camp, who later told us about her memories of watching frm the street as victims were led into the concentration camps. She was like four years old at the time.

But you're right that this still sounds like it has one foot between early TV and one between the band that would make MM. These long improv stretches were a move in that direction. There's a great story about Tom breaking all his strings and then beating the hell out of his amp during a version of this song that same year.

He had a bajillion books, most of them in storage spaces. The best part about the sale was looking at the big patterns in what he collected, but he collected very widely. A lot of the books had little handwritten notes in them with valuations, probably from looking them up online.
