Favoriting January 12, 2025: Jane Ira Bloom's Celestial Soundings ... And Dizzy (Nope, The Other One) Reece

Jane Ira Bloom, soprano sax standout from Boston celebrates her 70th, and we'll delve into her long discography, performing with the likes of Bobby Previte, Fred Hersch, Mark(s) Helias and Dresser, Allison Miller...and going back a bit - with Ed Blackwell, Abdul Wadud, Anthony Davis and many others. Jane is the first person to be commissioned by the NASA Art Program, and composed three works for them, and in fact has an asteroid named after her! And the best part is: Jane will be joining us in the chat - live!!

Trumpeter Dizzy Reece from Kingston Jamaica (93 and still kickin'!) moved to London in 1948 and started working with Brit jazz greats like Tubby Hayes and Victor Feldman, and with many great American ex-pats like Don Byas and Kenny Clarke. He began a string of great Blue Note recordings in the late 50's, then turned to more experimental music in the 60's and 70's. Perhaps under-known due to his being a contemporary of Dizzy Gillespie, and playing the same instrument, he's "that other Dizzy." If you don't know him, here's your chance, and if you do... let's dig his joyous racket!

' Jane Ira Bloom (born January 12, 1955) is an American jazz soprano saxophonist and composer.
Bloom was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Joel and Evelyn Bloom. She began as a pianist and drummer, later switching to the alto saxophone, and eventually settling on the soprano saxophone as her primary instrument. She first began playing the saxophone at age 9, studying with woodwind virtuoso Joseph Viola, chair of the Berklee College of Music Woodwinds Department, from 1968 to 1979, and studying music at Yale University from which she received a liberal arts degree and a master's degree in music (1977). Following Yale, Bloom relocated to New York City. She founded Outline Records while in New Haven and released several recordings under that label.
She was the first musician to be commissioned by the NASA Art Program. in 1989 she created three original musical compositions: Most Distant Galaxy, for soprano saxophone and live electronics, prepared tape, bass, drums, and electroacoustic percussion; Fire & Imagination, for soprano saxophone, improvisors, and chamber orchestra; and Beyond the Sky, for wind ensemble.
In 2007, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in music composition.
Bloom is a tenured professor at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City's Greenwich Village.
Her 2013 release, Sixteen Sunsets, received a Grammy nomination for the 56th Grammy Awards in the Best Surround Sound category, with sound engineer Jim Anderson.
Bloom won the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works award in 2015 for a new composition inspired by the 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson.
The resulting work, entitled "Wild Lines" premiered in 2016 to positive reviews.
Bloom won the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound category at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards for her album “Early Americans.”

Jane - I should explain lest you become alarmed - Glenn Passaic is a spirit, concocted from ingredients that are none of our business. The only known ingredient is water from the Passaic River. We celebrate here at The Club with various cocktails, mostly engineerd by our Mixmaster General adamdoesit. Glenn Passaic may exist only in or minds, but if you tell us that, we'll resent it, and turn into ugly drunks.

  12:57pm
Dean:

I guess I did, spodiodi, because I sat up and out loud asked nobody in particular, "Are we having an earthquake?" But the ceiling fan wasn't swaying, and I am used to our cats sitting on a rickety table to scratch themselves, causing all sorts of disaster-like sounds, so I decided not to worry.

Jane: you obviously have put a lot of work into shaping your sound, controlling it, sometimes manipulating it electronically

But off the top of my head I can't recall any recording where you really went gutbucket with your sound?

I could be wrong/forgetting!

But if I"m not completely wrong: do you think this is a function of the kinds of compositions/settings that you are drawn to? Inherent in the soprano sax? Or... something else?

It's like the soprano chose me. Was playing alto too in 1976 when I released my first album but somehow the soprano tracks spoke to me. I also credit my training with Joe Viola who was a masterful soprano player and strong influence early in my journey.

Will we hear from the Emily Dickinson record? Here's Robert Iannapolo's conclusion to his review in Cadence in 2018:

"Bloom is on a roll. One could pick up any of her last five releases and be assured of a worthwhile listen. But WIld Lines, is my recommendation. It's a good demonstration of what a creative musician can do when faced with presenting material in multiple ways."

Jane: your first recordings came out just before the whole "young lions" thing, I don't think you were labeled that way. (I'm sure the musicians who were so-labeled didn't love it.) Did you feel that the industry focus on the "young lions" created opportunities for you? Or hindered? Or...?

That's a fascinating completion of a circle for me, inasmuch as I learned about audiophile Levinson in the early '80s, when my taste in music was broadening, you know, Braxton, Leandre, and so forth. It's oddly comforting to know there was already a connection.
