I have good coloured pressings and terrible coloured pressings. I think it just depends on how scuzzy the record plant is/was.

Dean:

My gut tells me that black vinyl is more likely to sound superior, too. Just two days I ago I received an issue of Cardi B's Gangsta B*tch Music v.1 and 400 Blows' black rainbow, both on "colored" or "splatter" vinyl. I do not assume that the original recordings or even the remasters are super-high quality, but I want to think that plain ol' black would have been superior, all else being equal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm

Splatter vinyl looks very pretty and my ear is pretty wild and untamed (meaning I likely wouldn't be able to discern a difference in sound q from one to the next), but again... if a straight up black vinyl option is available, it's always a buck or two cheaper.

i once bought a stereolab translucent gold w/ glitter 2xLP (refried ectoplasm), and the next week i returned to the record store, and saw it on black vinyl for four bucks cheaper (they let me trade it in for the $4 store credit).

  9:52pm
Dean:

A friend of mine bought all five or six releases of Devo's first, which was out of the UK, each a different color.

It's often harder to discern the divisions between tracks on colored vinyl, certainly on translucent vinyl.

I fancy myself an audiophile of sorts, but I have my limits. I don't demand thick vinyl, 180 grams, for instance. I also think too many folks denigrate their auditory discernment. With the right opportunity, lots of folks would hear important differences in recorded product.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Alex from Media:

I could see the coloring affecting the physical properties, making it maybe softer, changing the melting point. Then again, my old Dreamboat Annie Heart portrat vinyl is still holding up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Mike Lupica:

↳ Dean @9:52
You make an excellent point here, which probably also accounts for my preference for black vinyl. Colored / splattered vinyl is a DJ's nightmare.

Dean:

There are files and files. I don't maintain much a file collection, but I did visit a stereo store recently that at the time didn't have a CD transport to play the discs I'd brought along. However, they did have a network server/streamer through which they could stream high-res versions of the discs through a $200K system. (A former client was Steve Jobs. I can't imagine that he wanted anything more than a Close-and-Play.) The sound was spine-tinglingly astonishing. But the turntable sounded better, even with LPs in crappy condition.

I first saw Devo before that show, Franco, The Whisky, and I also saw them at that show.

total idiosyncratic anecdote... i worked on a up- dating of la boheme to the LES (before RENT). there was an actor who had to sing a line "peanut butter cup" in it....he kept on singing "peanut butter butt" so the song had to dropped

You need to know this Mike: In 1978, mt girlfriend and I went to the Lighthouse - a club in Hermosa Beach to see Lightnin' Hopkins. Jeffery Lea Pierce and Fast Freddy Patterson were sitting in front of us. Before the show started, Jeff confined in Freddy that the fist record he ever owned was a Bobby Vee 45 he found in the trash.

That's how the blue were born.
