PLRLS | Look At The Nerds | Your Situation | Amalgamated Widget | 2015 | PLRLS is a 5 person band from Baltimore, Maryland. They are a disgraced nightclub owner (Ottobar), a shattered TV personality (Ace of Cakes), an ex-chauffeur and a has-been graphic designer. They have made peculiar, colorful and angular music together since 2011. This music has been described as New Wave and/or Post Punk with a certain Operatic/Surfy twang. | 0:01:43 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Scimitar | Silent Room | Silent Room | Scimitar | 2024 | Scimitar are a 3 band from Los Angeles. They play post punk darkwave sounds with vocals mostly in Spanish. | * | 0:04:49 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
No Teeth | Stealing For My Own Gain | Decadence in Breeding | Post Post Music | 2024 | "Hailing from Newcastle Upon Tyne, the band creates a proposal that is akin to a fusion of CARDIAC ARREST/CARDIACS, ALTERNATIVE TV and COUNTRY TEASERS with FALL-esque creative dissent to its punk hued clamour. It is hungry in unpredictability and ripe in mischief and their new offering relishes the fact that everything about the band and its sound is a yard left of expectations and stability. With each song within Decadence in Breeding described as embracing “a thematic exploration of debauchery, hedonism, and depravity” sharing characters “of nefarious descent, delving into subjects like gambling, sexual deviance, murder, and gluttony”, the album is a storybook of twisted tales wrapped in unhinged sound and quite glorious as it takes ears and the imagination on a manic ride." - The Ringmaster Review | 0:08:06 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Twistettes | Tory Cunts | Tory Cunts Single | Traffic Cone Records | 2024 | Jo and Nicky Darc make up The Twistettes with their dirty, twisted bass sound, a hit of swinging flare and thumping driving drums. They are punk, riot grrl, real-deal indie with a touch of psychobilly. They have performed at various venues from the legendary Glasgow Barrowlands to secret underground parties.... | 0:11:07 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Grounders | Mickey Can't Move | Coffee & Jam | Grounders | 2018 | Grounders hail from our hometown of Toronto and are Andrew Davis (vocals and guitar), Daniel Busheikin (keyboards), Mike Searle (Bass) and Evan Lewis (guitar).... They were formed in 2010 and this was their final record. Grounders described themselves as" a six-piece rock 'n roll gang fueled by a primal punk rock spirit, and steered by a love of slinky disco, art rock, and AM gold songwriting." | 0:13:43 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Slender | Up In The Air | Learn to Die | Digital Regress | 2024 | Slender began over a decade ago as a semi-improvisational cassette recording project, a casual collaboration between a few friends that was initially documented by two self-titled cassette-only releases released in 2014 and 2015 respectively, now both unavailable and out of print. Their prior work has earned them comparisons to anarcho-punks Crass and The Snipers, lo-fi flagbearers Swell Maps and Pink Reason, and artrockers Cromagnon and Amon Düül. On Learn to Die however, such comparisons feel largely unfounded and the band feels somewhat peerless. Moments of artpunk brutalism, lo-fi experimentalism, and kosmiche detours enter the picture.... | 0:17:07 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Heart Attack-Acks | Moldy | Moldy Single | The Heart Attack-Acks | 2024 | Released just last month, I am loving this band! They are from Queens, NY. They are so fucking cool. Effortless chic that is surfy, new wave, punk...all the good things. Fuzzy rattling guitars and good old fashioned bratty singalongs that belong on a John Waters movie soundtrack. I feel this so fucking hard. | * | 0:19:29 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Charles Wilp Fotografiert Bunny |
Sight and Sound |
1966 |
One of the more interesting curios to emerge from the space age pop revival, Charles Wilp's sole LP is a mystery wrapped in an enigma and smothered in secret sauce -- how or why this influential German photographer even came to release an album in his name is unknown, and though he's credited with production, it's likely that his true musical involvement in the project was minimal. The concept and execution boast all the hallmarks of his work, however, and that's what's most important. The record is playfully erotic, complete with cooing female voices and languorous, porn-like melodies that wonderfully evoke the pop art sensuality of Wilp's cheesecake photos, a number of which are reproduced on the sleeve. Had Michelangelo Antonioni's classic film Blowup forgone its rock & roll soundtrack for a more easy listening sound, Wilp's music would have been a perfect fit. |

Avalanche Party | John Coltrane's Moscow Skyscraper | Der Traum Uber Alles | AMK / Kartel Music Group | 2025 | Yorkshire feral garage-punk band Avalanche Party announce the release of their forthcoming studio album “Der Traum Über Alles” on February 7th, 2025, via AMK, Kartel Music Group’s alternative music imprint. //// ... “John Coltrane’s Moscow Skyscraper” ... Vocalist Jordan Bell comments on the single: “This is full of that caged spirit of wanting to be let off the leash. Take half the strings off your guitar, tune the ones remaining to the same note, play them one after the other, rhythmically. You have a song. There was an effort to make music that was more minimal, how simple can you make something that still works? Hold back the noise”. --------- Formed in 2016, Avalanche Party: Jordan Bell (vocals, guitar), Joe Bell (bass, vocals), Jared Thorpe (guitar, sax, vocals), Glen Adkins (keys) and Kane Waterfield (drums) have stated “nobody comes from where we come from”. Hailing from different corners of North Yorkshire, the band was put together by the brothers Bell, who were brought up on a farm on the sprawling moors, home-schooled by their parents and initiated into the counterculture by their father Pete, who in the late 1960s was resident bassist at Beckenham Arts Lab, playing alongside Bowie among other South East London radicals. //// Blitzing together their distinctive styles (Waterfield’s hard-hitting, bouncing-bomb drumming; Thorpe’s expressive avant-rock pyrotechnics; Joe Bell’s athletic basslines; Adkins’ intoxicating synth), Avalanche Party create a noise that blends and twists their individual influences into shapes that defy any neat label. Intended as a deviation from the ‘loud, thrashy’ live performances that first got them noticed, the band’s 2019 debut LP “24 Carat Diamond Trephine” spurts forth a spectrum of styles, leaping from frenetic garage-psych to sedate surrealistic Americana to staccato uplifting indie rock over the course of its thirty-nine minutes. //// Forthcoming album “Der Traum Über Alles”, in contrast, is a more considered, full-formed beast..." https://avalancheparty.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:29:32 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Bob Vylan | Dream Bigger (feat. Amy Taylor) | Dream Bigger (Single) | Ghost Theatre | 2025 | UK duo Bob Vylan have shared a new version of their song “Dream Big” from 2024’s Humble as the Sun. They’ve retitled it “Dream Bigger” and it now features a verse from Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers. The two groups have toured together before, and are about to start another run together in Australia; plus, one of Amyl & The Sniffers’ singles from their 2024 album Cartoon Darkness was titled “Big Dreams,” so it’s all a natural fit. Taylor brings her usual indefatigable energy to the song which mixes punk and jungle. “This track came about when I suggested the idea to Amy in passing and on a day off from her tour with The Sniffers we linked up in the studio and created this alternate version to ‘Dream Big,'” say Bob Vylan. “I thought given that she has made it from Australia to become an international rock star who else could speak on the concept of dreaming big with such authority?” Listen below. Bob Vylan’s dates with Amyl and The Sniffers begin Friday, January 17 in Perth, Australia. Amyl will be back in North America this spring with Sheer Mag, including an NYC show at The Rooftop at Pier 17 on May 15. All Amyl dates are listed below. | * | 0:38:54 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Squid | Building 650 | Cowards | Warp Records | 2025 | Cowards by Squid is out via Warp on February 7; squidband.uk -- "The music video for the track Building 650 involves three directors collaborating on a multifaceted portrait of Tokyo life and culture //// Warp music group Squid’s latest single, Building 650, takes inspiration from Ryū Murakami’s 1997 novel In the Miso Soup, which takes a surreal, disturbing journey into the Japanese night-time. The group handed the task of creating a music video for the single to Felix Geen, who previously directed the video for their single Narrator. That was set in a range of glitchy 3D worlds, drawing on the director’s background in CG and VFX. However, for their new single, Geen was keen to root the video in real spaces. //// “I instantly bought myself a copy of Ryū Murakami’s In the Miso Soup and read it all in one sitting. Straightaway I knew this video had to take place in Tokyo,” Geen explains. To bring it to life, he turned to local director Daisuke Hasegawa, who Geen met on a previous trip to the city, and who in turn brought his own team on board, including Kuya Tatsujo as another co-director. //// After speaking with Geen about the project, Hasegawa read the book and began thinking of concepts. “Afterward, Felix and I worked together on the structure, incorporating his expertise in dynamic and humorous VFX along with elements from 1970s Japanese experimental cinema,” he explains." //// The video blends digital and analogue material, bringing together Geen’s elaborate “deconstructed city shots”, which he says are “grounded by the raw and natural 8mm film work” by Hasegawa and Tatsujo. //// Tatsujo was keen to draw on the book while also incorporating “scenes from contemporary Japan”, namely the struggles that young people face in modern life. “The wave of technology is overwhelming, and an intense sense of fear, driven by the need to interact with others, envelops the city,” Tatsujo says. //// This was something that was also on Hasegawa’s mind – to build on the 1990s Tokyo of the book and evolve it for today. “One of the most striking lines from the novel stayed with me: ‘Most of the streetwalkers do it for the money, but the deeper reason is that they do it to fill the emptiness of their own loneliness.’ This line had a profound impact on me, and I felt strongly that I wanted to express the reality of Tokyo, of Japanese society, and of the people living in it today, as an answer to the novel.” //// The script was rewritten at each stage of a new director becoming involved, though the collaborators didn’t shy away from this and instead embraced each evolution. The work became all the richer for it, blending insider and outsider perspectives of Tokyo culture in a unique way. //// “In the end, I believe we were able to depict the complex and chaotic nature of Tokyo as Felix perceives it, while also considering how we, as Japanese people, respond to it,” says Hasegawa. “The result is a piece that touches on the deeper layers of society, much like the chaotic world portrayed in In the Miso Soup.” //// Working with other directors has also introduced Geen to a different way of working, which has left an imprint on him for the long term. “As someone who does not come from a traditional film education background, I always shy away from doing things with actors and scripts and lights and big cameras, but it was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever had the opportunity to be involved in.”" Squid - Building 650 (Official Video) | * | 0:41:57 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Mekons | Mudcrawlers | Horror | Fire Records | 2025 | "Legendary post-punk / folk / country / eclectic / experimental / art collective the MEKONS are set to embark on one of their biggest tours yet in the new year, taking in UK, Europe and the US. //// The first part of the tour starts in the UK in May 2025 and they play 21 dates on this UK/EU leg during the whole of this month, before then crossing back Stateside at the start of July for a further 17 dates in US cities. //////// Being true mavericks, Mekons are one of the longest-running and most staunchly independent-minded and creative groups ever to emerge from the initial British punk era. They have defied all passing fads and trends whilst transcending all possible genres, regularly garnering much critical respect and admiration for their countless albums which have stretched across almost five decades now (they celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2026). //////// Since their ‘second wave’ of activity in the mid 1980s, Mekons have been extremely prolific with their releases, collaborating with a roll call of artists as diverse as Vito Acconci, Lester Bangs (who appeared posthumously on 1990’s dance-friendly FUN ’90 EP) and Kathy Acker (1996’s deliriously uncategorisable and gleefully schizoid musical narrative Pussy, King Of The Pirates), and staying true to their wilfully eclectic approach to albums, whilst retaining pretty much the same line up of personnel (Jon Langford, Tom Greenhalgh, Sally Timms, Susie Honeyman, Steve Goulding, Lu Edmonds, Eric Bellis aka Rico, Dave Trumfio) over the following 30 years or so to the present." ------- "...Mekons return with a brand-new album for 2025. Their first release on Fire Records, ‘Horror’ a collection of songs written in late 2022 but providing a horribly prescient reflection of the world in its current miasma and how we got here. //// ‘Horror’ looks at history and the legacies of British imperialism with mashed up lyrics set against a typically eclectic sound that amalgamates everything from dub, country, noise, rock & roll, electronica, punk, music hall, polka and you can even take your partner for a nice waltz on ‘Sad And Sad And Sad’. The roots of their global sound reflect their nomadic journey through time and space from Leeds to California in the West and Siberia in the East and is woven into the fabric and intricacies of their song creation… //// Sounding like The Chills and R.E.M circa the I.R.S Records years, ‘Mudcrawlers’ sees just about the whole band joining Jon Langford on vocals speaking of Irish famine and refugees journeying to Wales. ‘War Economy’ shivers in the cold of such Boroughs spiked one-liners: “Clinical coercion will not achieve dominance!” Sounding like its straight off a Jenny Holzer neon sign (she of Abuse Of Power Comes As No Surprise), it’s held together by a disgruntled swaggering riff that underpins an explosion of disquiet." | * | 0:45:47 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Olivier Pépin |
2025 |
"Olivier Pépin is jealous - ask him why. A polymath in parallel activities for two decades, the Montrealer first made a name for himself as a guitarist through groups ranging from jazz to experimental rock to dance-rock (Rock Forest, Bad Dylan) as well as musical director and accompanist of Pierre Kwenders. //// Jealous: the name of a solo avenue that had been unearthed for some time now, but, due to lack of time, the ideas attached to it became at best instrumental vignettes presented here and there. Then, at the turn of the decade, with most of the aforementioned projects fallow, he gave himself months to work on compositions in a completely autonomous company, signing lyrics, music, interpretation and programming. //// "Inspiration is something that is built": from sketches of themes and melodies, borrowing as much from the action films of the 90s as from the synthwave and goth-pop of the 80s, he lets himself be guided and pours through accidents and setbacks in order to surprise himself, catching as much snippets of Vangelis' horizontal vertigo as improbable melodies standing out from the noise of Sonic Youth in his muses. He harvests a colorful and calmly experimental pop: combining art-pop, synthetic chamber pop and Franco pop song from the 80s, Jalouse articulates tunes of nocturnal observations, self-examinations and remission, something like a "perfect mix of 'dark' and guilty pleasure". And he affixes texts to them, with subjects "more personal [than he would have thought] before", touching on the syndrome of living in the past, the fear of growing old and the dialogue with his inner saboteur, among others." https://jalousemusic.bandcamp.com/ |

Anika | Love Buzz | Anika EP | Stones Throw Records | 2013 | Note the single “n” in her stage name; she once described the difference as offering “part of me, not all of me,” stating, “You’re indestructible if you split yourself into little bits.” She’s succeeded in so much as it still seems hard to get an idea of the real Henderson. Sure, she was once a Berlin-based journalist reporting on education reform, and lived in Bristol before that, but the majority of her releases have comprised fantastically dank, intimidating dub covers of pop and folk songs with BEAK> as her backing band... The unusual lope in her brusque singing style makes it seem tragic, passionate even. - Pitchfork | 1:01:47 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Sunflowers | I'm Waiting For The Man | SFHC 2014-2024 vol. 1 | Sunflowers | 2024 | To commemorate ten years of pushing the boundaries of psych-punk, Portugal's Sunflowers have released a special two-volume compilation, "SFHC 2014-2024". This collection serves as both a retrospective and a window into the band’s creative process over the past decade, giving fans access to never-before-heard material that spans the full range of their sound and evolution. Vol.1 dives into the raw essence of Sunflowers' studio work, focusing on the live loops the band uses, studio outtakes, and demos. These recordings capture the band's inventive spirit, offering an inside look at the process behind some of their most iconic tracks. The live loops, in particular, showcase how Sunflowers build their never-a-awkward-silence live performances, a technique they’ve honed through years of explosive shows. The outtakes and demos are equally revealing, shedding light on the band's songwriting process and the early, unpolished stages of songs that would go on to become fan favourites. It’s a rare opportunity for listeners to trace the band's journey from rough sketches to full-blown sonic assaults, emphasizing their DIY ethos and experimental nature. | * | 1:05:21 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Pioneer 11 | Rock Lobster | Calibration EP | POW Recordings | 2018 | Named after a NASA space probe launched in 1973, L.A. duo Pioneer 11 signal their intergalactic influences pretty clearly. That mission did not go to plan, however, and the original Pioneer 11 is currently floating around the cosmos; quite where, nobody knows. Citing Caribou, Darkside, and Radiohead's more experimental moments as influences, Pioneer 11's approach to music is both unique yet reassuringly warm and connected at all times. More cosmic than anything, Gomez and Hastings's music has a transcendent and psychedelic feel to it...with the goal of melding live instrumentation and electronics. | 1:10:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Big Bill | Escape (The Pina Colada Song) | Escape (The Piña Colada Song) Single | Big Bill | 2024 | And Egg punk cover of the Pina Colada song? YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU. This version was recorded for Mary Dauterman’s new horror film BOOGER. @collider says “Booger is a bold and refreshing journey into grief and the damaging effects of holding it in when it desperately wants to claw its way out.” Big Bill pairs propulsive music coupled with a singularly weird point of view (in this case via the sped/up Buddy Holly vocals of primary singer/songwriter Eric Braden.) Their songs can evoke the weirdo punk of Dead Milkmen and Devo, the self-aware new wave of The B-52’s and Talking Heads, or, especially as their sound has matured, the strange softness of The Clean and even Elliott Smith. | 1:14:45 (MP3 | Pop-up)

A wildly dense and completely off-leash, scrambled-egg, idiot-prog punk adventure. Groovy, freaked out new wave/post-punk littered with psychedelic flashes, punctuated by snarky, strange, slice of life lyrics about intentionally over inflating a tire, a robotic peeping tom, urban legends about drugs, shunning self-improvement, an annoying bug, going to the dentist, and the thrill of trying something new. | * | 1:20:18 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

The Dream Syndicate | The Days of Wine and Roses | The Days of Wine and Roses | Slash Records | 1982 | "The Days of Wine and Roses is the second record and the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band the Dream Syndicate. It was released in October 1982 through Ruby Records, a division of Slash Records. Produced by Chris D. (of the Flesh Eaters/Divine Horsemen), it was recorded in Los Angeles in September 1982. It was released for the first time on CD in 1993. 2001 and 2015 reissues on CD featured different bonus tracks. //// The phrase "days of wine and roses" is originally from the poem "Vitae Summa Brevis" by the English writer Ernest Dowson (1867–1900): They are not long, the days of wine and roses: / Out of a misty dream / Our path emerges for a while, then closes / Within a dream." | 1:34:41 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Feelies | Crazy Rhythms | Crazy Rhythms | Stiff | 1980 | Crazy Rhythms is the debut studio album by American rock band the Feelies. It was released in the United Kingdom on February 29, 1980, and in the United States in April 1980, through British record label Stiff. Its fusion of post-punk and jangle pop was influential on the forthcoming alternative rock genre, with R.E.M., among others, citing the album as an influence. Although it was not commercially successful initially, it has remained critically lauded in the decades since its release. //// In September 2009 the album was performed live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series. //// On the album, band member Glenn Mercer has said "The sound we were after was a reaction against the punk scene [...] Being a little older, we felt it had all been done before. We wanted the guitars to be cleaner, and we started experimenting with a lot of percussion." | 1:42:08 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Pixies | Vamos | Surfer Rosa | 4AD | 1988 | "Surfer Rosa is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British label 4AD. It was produced by Steve Albini. //// Surfer Rosa's lyrical content includes examinations of mutilation and incest in "Break My Body" and "Broken Face", while references to superheroes appear on "Tony's Theme". Voyeurism appears in "Gigantic", and surrealistic lyrics are featured on "Bone Machine" and "Where Is My Mind?". Puerto Rico references and Spanish lyrics are found on the tracks "Oh My Golly!" and "Vamos." The latter track was previously featured on Come On Pilgrim, and appears on Surfer Rosa as a rerecorded version of the original song. Many of the themes explored on previous recordings are revisited on Surfer Rosa; however, unlike on the band's later albums, the songs in Surfer Rosa are not preoccupied with one overarching topic. //// Other unusual and offbeat subject matter is raised on the album. "Cactus" is narrated by a prison inmate who requests his girlfriend smear her dress with blood and mail it to him. "Gigantic" is about an illicit love affair and borrows from the 1986 film Crimes of the Heart, in which a married woman falls in love with a teenager. Francis was inspired to write "Where Is My Mind?" after scuba diving in the Caribbean. He later said he had "this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why—I don't know too much about fish behavior." | 1:48:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Music behind DJ: The Velvet Underground |
Sister Ray |
White Light/White Heat |
Verve Records |
1968 |
"White Light/White Heat is the second studio album by the American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released on January 30, 1968, by Verve Records, it was the band's last studio album with multi-instrumentalist and founding member John Cale. Recorded after band leader Lou Reed fired Andy Warhol, who had produced their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico, they hired Steve Sesnick as a manager and hired producer Tom Wilson, who had worked on the band's debut. White Light/White Heat was engineered by Gary Kellgren. //// The album includes lyrically transgressive themes like their debut, exploring topics such as sex, amphetamines, and drag queens. Reed was inspired by a variety of authors, including William S. Burroughs and Alice Bailey, and the lyrics create a cast of characters, such as in "The Gift" and those named in "Sister Ray". Musically, he took influence from jazz music and players such as saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Warhol conceived the album's cover art, although he is officially uncredited. //// White Light/White Heat was recorded quickly and modeled after the band's live sound and techniques of improvisation, since they often played loud with new equipment from an endorsement deal with Vox. However, the final product was compressed and distorted—most members were dissatisfied with the final product and it was followed with the less experimental The Velvet Underground the following year; Cale would leave the band later in 1968. The distortion level became a prototype for punk rock, shoegaze and noise rock. The 17-minute "Sister Ray" is widely considered the standout track by critics and fans. //// White Light/White Heat sold fewer copies than The Velvet Underground & Nico, and peaked at 199 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. The album's only single, "White Light/White Heat", failed to chart, which the band blamed on airplay bans and lack of promotion from Verve. The album was dismissed by many contemporary mainstream music critics, although underground newspapers took notice. Ultimately, White Light/White Heat had a significant impact on early forms of punk rock and no wave and has appeared on several lists of the greatest albums of all time, including being placed at number 272 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of all Time" in 2020." |
