A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

By the time I discovered Teengenerate, they had already dissolved, and had moved on. But Guitar Wolf was going strong, and I saw them a few times over the years. But really, Guitar Wolf introduced me to Teengenerate, not the other way around.

And if I'm really honest: The Cramps introduced me to Guitar Wolf, who then introduced me to Teengenerate.

Yep, I've spotted one error so far, The Queers song, #15 is actually called "Kicked out of the Webelos."

I was once a Webelo myself.

To see a band that did a mixture of this many covers and originals, and a band that warped all covers to fit their style, was not entirely common in 1994. REM sort of made a name for themselves doing lots of covers mixed with lots of originals (something they claim to have learned from The Replacements, who also did that.) But by 1994, grunge had sort of planted the seed of all original songs, so that was what most bands were doing. It was sort of refreshing to see them do their take on what The Sonics did.

#22 Teenage Kicks should be attributed to The Undertones.

We've already heard them repeat "Get Back" at the top of the show. They often started their sets with that tune, and it was a favorite at live shows. I think we'll hear it one more time before the end of the show.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

While you might expect the primitive sound of a live show to be expected for something like this, when you listen to their records, they sound like this, too. They really went for a wall of sound approach to the way they recorded and played their music. If they weren't so tight, it might just come off as noise rock.

Mr. X:

I seem to recall you've played Guitar Wolf on the show before, yes? I think it was you who inspired me to look them up and give them a listen.

Austin Rich:

↳ Mr. X @9:27
I've played them a bunch. I've seen them three times, and they are always excellent. But they sort of take the Teengenerate idea to the next level, and some of their records are so primitive sounding that they ARE just noise rock. I think Teengenerate really still wanted to sound like a rock band, even at their most extreme.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

As hinted at above, seeing Guitar Wolf open for The Cramps in the late 90's was just incredible, and opened my eyes not just to Guitar Wolf, but thinking about music from Japan, and wondering what else was out there. I knew The Boredoms from the local college station, but otherwise, I didn't really know anything else. It made me a little more curious at the record store, after that Cramps show.

You can find a video of this set on YouTube, paired with the New Bomb Turks set, from the same night. It's about an hour and 45 minutes, about movie length, and well worth watching, if you wanna get a sense of what wild rock and roll bands were like in the mid-90's.

Not only do I love their appreciation for the Subway "Spicy Italian" sandwich that they ate for dinner that night, I also love that they mis-identified their opening song, probably their most famous song. Teengenerate would regularly mis-identify the songs they were playing - usually their own - and would often start the show claiming to be an entirely different, very famous band, when they were not introduced by someone else. They were sort of "pranksters" on stage, and spoke / sang in English, no mater what country they played in. (Even their home country, Japan.)

You can watch the whole set of this Portland performance on YouTube, and it's easy to find. There are two listings, from the same person. One is a little longer, and you get to see people hanging out at EJ's in 1995, before the band starts, and it's sort of magical...

While I can't exactly recommend this to everyone, because they would have to know Obadiah and whatnot, but getting to see the documentary about them on his huge ass TV was really something. It was like a small movie theater, it was so big.

Austin Rich:

One of the cutest parts of the documentary is when one of the guys in the band starts wearing a red dog collar on stage, and it becomes the talk of the town back in Japan. It's like some sort of Punk Rock F. Scott Fitzgerald story, or something. I kept thinking, "In the 90's? That seemed odd." But I have to remember that in 1994 / 95, punk in Japan was perceived very differently than it was in the US, and the dog collar thing was something you would only see in magazines, to them.

There's a book about rock and roll from the late 80's, through to 2001, called "We Never Learn." It's written by Eric Davidson, of the New Bomb Turks, who toured a lot with Teengenerate. It's a great overview of the indie Rock and Roll scene that grew up in parallel to Grunge.

I have been to The Fireside Bowl many times. When I was underage, I used to get someone to buy me beer outside of a gas station, and sneak it into the fireside bowl in my backpack. I even played at the fireside bowl once, but long after it's hey day. Saw Nomeansno there a couple times, as well as Citizen Fish, The Casualties, Alkaline Trio when they still wore khakis, etc.
