My apartment has central a/c that has never worked a damn. Landlord finally gave up and sprang for a couple of the Midea u-shaped window units. They're quiet, they seem to use less electricity than the central, and they work better than it ever did. Would buy on my own dime.

I'm in NYC where most of the prewar buildings have window units. I have one in my main bedroom, and one portable one for the living room. I have used the portable one exactly once and may just sell the damn thing. I had aspirations of storing it in my storage unit over the winter but even though it's on wheels it's a pain in the ass to move. Works great but SO LOUD that when I used it for the purpose purchased -- keeping cool while watching TV or gaming -- that I stopped using it.

I still have a drop in fan in the space between my BR window and the AC -- gets so hot at night from the steam heat that I have to run a fan but I'm OK with that.

↳ Threemoons 🌛🌝🌜 @12:26
Yeah, the portables are like the worst NYers: loud, inefficient, and not actually cool.

The thing with the u-shaped window units is that the compressor sits outside the window, with the window shut behind it. Hence, quiet indoors.

One thing I learned in the a/c fixing saga is that the central compressor/mini split setups are not built to last, or even to be compatible with last year's model, so you're left scrounging when something breaks. If it's all stupid disposable tech, might as well make it easy to replace.

The brackets accommodate for both flat sills and raised lips. I had to MacGyver one of them a bit -- window wider than the bracket's max reach -- but it wasn't bad.

We have wall units, one in the kitchen and one in the front room. They were there when we moved in. When the front one broke a few years back, the landlord added the cost of the replacement to the rent! Which I assume means I can take it with me if I ever leave?

It has begun to fail as well. I don't even know. Waiting to see if the City Council passes the "right to cool" legislation.

Disposal of unfixable a/c's, fridges, etc. is problematic. NYC Sanitation has a service that will come and drain the refrigerant into a tank so it isn't released into the atmosphere. They then sticker it for pickup. I've tried this, and they actually come and do it! But there's also a guy in my neighborhood who goes around with a cart and vents the refrigerant into the air so he can scavenge the copper coils and wires to sell for scrap. I don't want him to do this, but it's also all he's got. Hard times are not good for our shared environment.

John Allen is always badgering Clay for playing only one Dead Moon song ("40 Miles of Bad Road").

Although he really plays two: also "54/40 or Fight!"

I normally don't complain about traffic noise in NYC, but WOW I just had to sit through 10 minutes of some asshole leaning on his horn at the intersection near Mt. Sinai. It boggles my mind that people can't understand the traffic/patient pickup and drop-off near a freaking hospital. That and the fact that about every 3 days, there's police activity AT the hospital when some family member starts freaking out at the staff. Sign.

I'm way too old to have facial hair changes, but in the past two months, it's been so cold in my hovel that it appears as though an area that had no beard all of the suddenly does (sort of on my cheeks).

Always had felt self-conscious about it being so sparse, but ideally wouldn't have any! (It's a pain to deal with - have considered lasers).
