You can have it with my blessing! I watched the Yacht Rock doc (on Max) a few nights ago and enjoyed it, but resent having Steely Dan's "Peg" in my head. (I don't mind the Doobies living up there, but I don't like the crowd that Fagen draws.)
I've also finally finished reading Carl Wilson's great book on Céline Dion's "Let's Talk About Love" and it helped me to realize my antipathy isn't for Steely Dan but for many of their fans.
(My antipathy was also dealt a major blue when Greg Tate and Burnt Sugar came to town to play Steely Dan songs. If Greg Tate co-signs, I need to reinvestigate!)

Nice party trick for non-piano players: during an E flat blues, if you just play random black keys up and down the keyboard, it sounds surprisingly like a real blues solo, because the minor pentatonic scale in Eb happens to be those notes.

It's funny, of course, that Fagen told the doc dude to f off when first contacted about it. Seems obvious the longer history of Dan music keeps them well out of being exclusively associated with the genre.
Don't have much of a take on Dan fans, but, hooey, boy, the band do incite varied responses. One FMU commenter found them too skeevy in their too-frequent young woman focus, another declared them in their influence to be the absolute and complete corrupters and ruiners of rock music for all time.
I find plenty to like in their records.

I don't have a problem with all Dan fans, but I'm wary of anyone who cares more about their sound system than the music.

Generally, Steely Dan's missives were whizzing past right over people's heads, both musically and lyrically. They planted themselves in the music industry like the monolith in Kubrick's 2001, and those young filmmakers come off like monkeys throwing poop at it. But they'll never know that.

First Witch
When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

When the battle's lost and won.
